So I posted on here a while back about my squeaky belt tensioner. So I got the tensioner replaced but now there's a different rattle and squeak. The shop that changed the belt twnsioner out said that the rattle is coming from the transmission and that its going to be about $825 (10 hours of work) to drop the transmission and put it back. The problem they fix will be in addition to that.

What's your take on this? Ill post a video of the rattle in a bit and let you hear for yourself.

Cost, place of the rattle, does it add up?

10 hours is a pretty normal labor time estimate to remove and reinstall a transmission. Actual time is significantly less for a good mechanic, but this is a pretty normal labor time, maybe even on the low end depending on make/model.

Without more details it's hard to guess at what it might be.

Is this a manual transmission? Could be a bad throwout bearing. Either way this seems like its becoming a very costly squeak.

Whoa. You have to drop the rear subframe? Yeah, $825 seems actually reasonable. That is a lot of work. Just part of the cost of ownership of certain cars.

Mechanical parts rattle and squeak. Leave it alone and save yourself 2K.

I am also very doubtful it has anything to do with the trans.

You shouldn't have to pay a good mechanic that kind of money to diagnose a problem.

well theres two problems here, the rattle and the squeak, they've already taken the transmission out, so the damage is already done to the wallet.

the squeak was still squeaking when they took the belt off (for the alternator and ac), so they said it was in the timing belt?

so theres a manifold that needs to be removed.

could anyone explain what they're probably looking for?
