My 2014 Impala takes 6 quarts of Mobile 1 as required. Is there really $50 worth of value here vs regular oil? Every 5000 miles this is getting pricey.

You can buy a five quart jug of MOBIL 1 at Wal-Mart for $25. It is not hard to change oil yourself. I just changed the oil in my Corolla buying five quarts of Toyota synthetic oil and a Toyota oil filter all purchased at the dealer for $35 and about 30 minutes of my time.

Depends on if you will keep the car long-term. If you will trade it off in a few years, the cheapest oil *that meets the manufacturer's specs* is fine.

Mobil-1 and other synthetics seem to keep valve guides in good shape for 100s of thousands of miles, better than dino oil for that anyway.

If you do the math, you spend a lot more on gas in 5000 miles than you do on that oil change.

If you want to save a buck and know that the job was done right, DIY.

Maybe not possible to DIY. The member may live where it is forbidden. I live in apartment complex where I can't change the oil on my car.

Why 5K? Synthetic should be good for at least 10-15K. Dino was spece'd by manufacturers for about 7500.

Someday! But in the meantime it is close to my SO place of work so it works. A little trade off.

Is the 5k interval a dealer suggested interval or in your owners manual. Most cars today have long intervals 7500 or more miles

The Impala comes with several different engines and you didn't say which was in your car. If it's speced as a 5w-30 oil, like that of the 3.6 V6, you can do a lot better in the choice of oil and a LOT cheaper. Mobil One has not turned in great number in analysis since Katrina when Mobil lost their PAO plant on the Mississippi River. It is a Gp III dino based oil since then. It does nothing great except drain the wallet. If you have cold startups below minus 25C, you'll need to look for an oil that has the lowest CCS rating. If your cold startups are above that, pay attention. The ASTM D-5800, which is a test for volatility, meaning high heat and what cooks off, most any 10w-30 oil will beat M1. The Pennzoil 10w-30 is 3 times better at high heat volatility than M1. So if you think M1 is providing more high heat protection, you'd be wrong. The ASTM test has the oil subjected to 250C temps or 482F for one hour. The rating is how much by weight the oil has lost over the period or in laymans terms, how much of it is gone in percentage of the original weight. Any loss of weight means the oil has not only gotten thicker, it's also gotten weaker. Mobil One 5w-30 will come in at 10.8% cooked off. The Pennzoil yellow bottle blend 10w-30 is at 4.1% cooked off. Due to the type of base and formulation of the Pennzoil, it will keep the internals cleaner too. Just because it has the word "synthetic" on the bottle doesn't mean it's better. Many of the blends can and will beat a synthetic, depending on the application. But if you just have the want for a synthetic, the Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Defy will run circles around the M1.

FWIW, if you have a pushrod engine, this should be of interest to you. The M1 5w-30 only has been failing IVA testing for several years now. Mobil claims the test is irrelevant because most motors today are OHC engines. The test is the amount of wear that occurs at the cam in a flat tappet type engine. The amount of wear is 3 times that of the maximum allowable. So if you have a pushrod engine and it just doesn't seem to have the power it did when new and you're using the 5w-30 M1 only, it's highly likely your cam is going flat due to the wear from the crappy oil you paid a lot for. If you're a die hard Mobil fan, use their Extended version. It doesn't have the problem.

Yew, and that's with Dino oil. Mobile 1 is full synthetic, guaranteed for 10,000 miles. $90 once a year for many drivers, is not a bad price. Wasting good oil at 5,000 miles is making your dealer money that you are throwing away.
