She's safer in a vehicle.....

A lot of muggings and assaults happen to people who walk to and from campus.

Kind of grim but it is what it is.

When my kid went to college he was in an appt. about 10 minutes from campus. He bought a bike, a rain slicker and a waterproof backpacking bag. Off he went every day, rain or shine. After his freshman year, he arranged his schedule so he only had classes on campus 3 days a week. The rest were online classes. They actually encourage those nowadays.
If I were a college student today, I'd totally consider a standing e-scooter for a couple hundred bucks. Or an e-bike.

Yeah, bicycles are too easy to steal, because stolen ones are easy to resell. Electric scooters just don't seem to be as easy to resell for thieves. Or even a gas-engine moped.

Corolla. Any year, any mileage. The roaches will be driving them long after we've destroyed ourselves on this planet.

I bought a 10-year-old Corolla one time because we needed a 2nd car, $3500 seemed affordable, it drove okay, mileage was around 80K or 90K, I don't remember. I figured, it's a Toyota. They last forever.

Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Oil leak, carburetor, many seals brittle and leaking, boots, power steering, and it seemed like every single light bulb needed replacement after a while. Even the damn glove compartment door wouldn't stay closed and I had to replace the latch mechanism.

It turns out that Corolla must have sat in someone's driveway in the Arizona desert for 10 years. Every piece of rubber had dried out and broken. All the hoses, belts, seals, boots, liners. And the engine had to be replaced. I must have put $10K into that car. Kept saying "Okay this is it! Now finally it will be perfect!"

So I'm a little gun shy. And no, I'm not big on repairs. Can do minor stuff but I can't replace an engine or brake boots.
Carburetor?? What year was this 1982 ??

For my kid, I’d put some money down and lease a Honda Civic. Cheaper and safer in the long run.

I just did a quick search within 100 miles of me and found three Toyota CAmry candidates (I put 7500 max price):

'01, 136k, $6000
'05, 113k, $6995
'07, 110k, $7450

Probably one of these would be dandy.

Have your kid get a part-time job, its part of the experience of growing up.

All cars are built differently, id trust a 200k mile Honda over a 125k mile Hyundai.

Get an old beater Honda, Toyota, Lexus or Acura, even old non-molested Ford Mustangs are reliable vehicles. Look on craigslist/marketplace for someone selling their well taken car of car and avoid any used car dealer or reseller.

No need for such fear-mongering. Your annual chance of being mugged is very, very low.
