Video description says the plane had passengers. It looks like the whole plane was engulfed. Hopefully people made it out safely.

Reports right now say the airliner was successfully evacuated but five of the six man crew of the Japanese Coast Guard plane that it collided with perished.

Very sad about the Japanese Coast Guard crew. That plane was on its way to help the earthquake victims.

And now the investigation begins. Cockpit crews, ground control or both? Up till now the Japanese have had a good record of safety.

I read that the Japan Airlines plane was cleared to land and the Coast Guard plane was NOT cleared to take off, so it seems the Coast Guard pilots were in the wrong and shouldn't have been on the runway.

So now we shift to how better to prevent accidents even when a pilot makes this sort of error

Respect to the JAL cabin crew for immediately assessing the situation and getting all those passengers off the aircraft. I’ve flown JAL several times and their crews always struck me as straight up professional and well trained.

The A350 has a composite/carbon fiber fuselage that reportedly gave the hundreds of passengers and crew time to evacuate the plane. Supposedly it would not have fared as well with an aluminum skin.

Nothing is without risk. Nothing. This type of thing is extremely rare. I'd say "one in a million" but it's far less common than that. How do you improve on a thing that's already 99.99999% good? And how will you know you've done it?

It's remarkable those people got out - and following procedure is one reason why it had a mostly happy turnout.

No flip flops, no fuzzy bunny slippers, no carry ons, and no "OMFG!!!!!!!!!" Orderly evacuation from smart passengers and a practiced calm crew. Thinking here (USA) outcome might have been different...

Report is the plane landing was cleared to land. Coast Guard was instructed to hold short of the runway. Red lights that signal stopping point were not operational.
