I was a young adult back then and knew it was ridiculous and would result in safety issues - but I guess the "experts" don't even care.

Regulations on airplanes are tighter than they were back then. The deregulation applied to fares, routing, etc. It has zero to do with the current problems that are almost exclusively caused by Boeing being managed by idiots that don't seem to think quality control is necessary for airplane safety.

That is incorrect.

There were safety measures that are not now being adhered to.

What safety measures are no longer in force? Air travel is far safer now than it was at the time of deregulation.

You're illiterate on the subject matter.

Yep, we're so much less safe in the air now than we were in the days when DC-10s crashed on takeoff and killed 300 people at a time.

Said no one, ever.

At Boeing, the #1 problem is that when McDonnell Douglas took over in 1997, they changed the fundamental drivers for the business. It used to be that Boeing led with product excellence with the thought that revenue would follow. That had worked great for many decades. The McDonnell Douglas execs thought that a lot of unnecessary time and money was being wasted on product excellence, that a lot of money was being left on the table because Boeing had been setting the bar unnecessarily high (for product). The focus was changed to cutting spending and cutting cycle times so as to pump up financial performance. If the overarching goals are doing things quickly and doing them cheaply, something will have to give.

The above is the main problem, although a second problem is that the FAA changed how they work with aircraft manufacturers in 2009 - when they began to allow them to self-inspect and self-certify that their planes met safety requirements. It was supposed to make things more efficient for aircraft manufacturers and save taxpayer money because the FAA would do less. But if you want safe planes, I think it's easy to see where such a system can go wrong - the so-called "watchdog" is out of the loop and no longer knows what's going on.

Do you know that the accident rate has decreased since 1978?

Yes, Neil Degrasse Tyson had one of his brief video presentations this past fall in which he discussed airline safety. A "double progress point" has been reached, meaning there are far more takeoffs and landings now compared to then and practically zero fatal accidents.
