I don't believe the OP has posted in a year or so. His posts were fun to read as they were always exciting!

Default Evidence

"They will patrol the entire subdivision (not just their street) waiting for an empty home, at which point, they will rob you blind, and take everything. Then they go through it, and dump what they don't need on a side road, with Noe Kuwahili currently one of the main dumping spots.

"Right now, according to a few sources, there is a chest freezer with a padlock on the side of that road, which no one will approach. What could be in there?"
https://prnt.sc/26cvxbd

I was told about at least 3 murders in the past year in that subdivision, 1 of which made headlines in Hawaii, as the victim was released from Hilo prison on probabtion for drug charges, and presumably immeditely went out to Leila street and was killed because he "was too hot".

I believe this was the case MikeyMike11 is mentioning.

"Kuhia was last seen on August 16, 2020, on Leila Road in Fern Forest."

ya Fern Forest has been a murder zone for years. Not shocking.

I was going to work and taking a couple classes at UH Hilo for a few years and I rented on Plumeria Road (Fern Acres). Our first week our neighbors three doors lots down had a murder ....throughout the years there were several more drug related shootings in the neighborhood.
Both our neighbors had dogs, lots of dogs. We also had two dogs.
Dogs seemed an integral part of the neighborhood, everyone knew each other's dogs.
Neighbors were both bonded yet private at the same time. Kind of an interesting balance of 'mind your own business', yet 'hey, can you keep an eye on our house? '
Immediately next door was a meth lab and dealers house, with cars coming over all hours and music bumpin' all hours....we never complained to the cops.......and no one at that house were ever seen leaving to go to a job.....but, they were a great asset, no one ever messed with them and consequently, us. We had a symbiotic relationship.

I'm glad I decided to do the research. A few months ago there was a house for sale that I fell in love with. It turns out it is in Fern Forest (which sounds like a happy innocent place). When I came across this forum I was floored. I even came to the BI to see Fern Forest myself, because I could not believe it was actually like this. I had to see Fern Forest for my own eyes. I guess my dream of buying a home in Hawaii for less than 150K and starting a new life will not come true. (Unless I can find one in Volcano Village/Mauna Loa Estates/Ohia Estates) since those seem to be the only places I would trust to live in Puna. It was the cutest little house and I'm still upset. That's why I did all this "evidence" finding. I was in denial that it was this bad.

https://www.zillow.com/homes/11.dash...38280046_zpid/ It says the house is in Volcano, but is really located deep within Fern Forest, on the road perpendicular to the "stolen goods dumping road".

Puna has been a problem for as long as I can remember, and I've lived in the state for 35 years. When moving to the Big Island, I was advised, being haole, not to move to Puna by a longterm resident. That advice has not changed. There are lots of great areas on the Big Island to live, all of them outside of Puna district. There are a lot of great people there, but the drug crime there is much higher than elsewhere on the island.
If your budget needs to be $150K you will get a lot more for your money closer to home. Home prices in Hawaii have gone as bonkers as lots of other places, so that a reasonable starting budget might be $400K for a cute little plantation cottage on a postage stamp lot in a rural community - that is a safe place to live.

I think you are being prudent and wise.

Nah Puna is pretty tame if you have lived in the 'hood before. You just gotta have the right mindset and it is great. Dogs are your alarm system...one of many different layers of security.

Au contraire. Puna is one of the best places on the Big Island to live. I'd take it over just about everywhere Kona side.

My opinion is that Puna has improved since I wrote this in 2011 (scroll down to my post)
