By the way, find "something to do" and don't talk about "having not much to do" or it will sound insulting to those who live here. Go to the library and become voracious readers, go on a picnic to the many beautiful areas of the countryside, ride bikes, make family scrapbooks, teach Sunday school, coach a kids soccer team, volunteer at a program to teach English to a hispanic child, teach your children to cook or teach several neighborhood children how to do tricks on a "yo-yo". Whatever you are good at, use to enhance your life and others. If you have spare time on your hands you are blessed.
I know it is a bit off topic but thank God someone said this! I've been seriously perplexed by people who say there is "nothing to do" in this city or that (and a lot of stalwart Los Angelenos who would refuse to move because other places are "boring", say this). I'm wondering how many people really need two dozen venues of entertainment in order to feel adequately occupied? I am hoping when we move to Alabama we will meet more friends with hobbies, because that is one complaint we have had about where we live - we hardly know anyone under the edge of 67 who has a hobby, like my husband's RC planes or amateur radio or my writing and painting. I was in a writer's critique group once and it was me and 3 people who were over 55. I think too much entertainment causes mental atrophy!

I have friends with Rottweilers here in Decatur. Their dogs are very gentle. People in Alabama love their dogs; I doubt you will have a problem unless you let your dogs run loose in the neighborhood. I may be wrong, but I really don't think any breed-specific legislation is a state-wide law. Local ordinances may be different.

Yeah, I think you are right southlander.. there are rescue groups in H'ville for Pit bulls and rotties.. who put them up for adoption at PetSmart. I have seen them on petfinders from animal control in the area too. The rescue group states adoption has to be within the area..
But it is against the law to have more than 3 cats in H'ville.
You can check the H'ville city ordinances online.. if you are interested..

The biggest problem in AL is too many people don't get their dogs spayed or neutered and then when the dog has puppies they just dump them on the side of the road. Of course that is a discussion for Pet forum..

Those who are looking for something to do should look in the Sunday Huntsville Times at the listings they have of all the organizational meeting. There are active groups for crafts, hobbies, AAUW, any number of interests.

I am bi-racial (my father is Black my mother is Asian) and I grew up in Birmingham. I would say that your best bet would probably be Homewood. Homewood's only real drawback is that it's so pricey, in terms of buying a house. You can find some cheap apartments there that are actually pretty good in terms of quality and safety, but if you're buying a house it's a whole nother story, Homewood can be quite pricey. But still well worth it - you'd be living in a very diverse community with excellent schools, close to downtown/Southside and 280 (the two main commercial areas in Birmingham and where you're job is most likely located if you live anywhere in the Birmingham area). So if you can afford Homewood, by all means do so. Places I would stay away from - Hoover. Mountain Brook. Vestavia's OK. Other outlying suburban areas that are borderline rural, especially north of Birmingham such as Warrior, Blount County, and for God's sake do not, I repeat DO NOT move to Cullman County. 99% of black people in Alabama will not even stop for gas in Cullman County, let alone live there, it is notorious among blacks in the state for being a hotbed of racism.

A few weeks ago I spent the day with a family I know consisting of a VERY white husband, a black wife, and 2 gorgeous--somewhere-in-between--daughters. We went to the downtown market and craft whatever at Pepper place. We were there for 2 or three hours then we had lunch at a country buffet in Trussville. Never did I notice anyone looking at us or avoiding us or acting strange in any way.

I have other interracial couple friends and do things with them often. Never had a bad experience. Yesterday I had lunch at a sandwich shop in Trussville and there was a beautiful forty something black woman dressed in business attire. Then a big burly white guy in jeans and old T-shirt came in and when they saw each other they were so happy and hugged. Obviously they were friends who hadn't seen each other in quite awhile. They talked and hugged again twice before parting.

It seemed that I was the only one in the shop that found it interesting. And the only reason I noticed was because I had just read this thread.

There are racists in Birmingham, of course. There are everywhere. How many? I dunno. But in Brimingham they know better than to let anyone know how they feel.

If you are really worried about being accepted by others................why would you marry outside your race?

You are not really worried are you?
