These guys say The Magic City can support a pro team of any sort, except baseball. Which doesn't surprise me, except I figured it would be an NFL team that would be just out of reach as opposed to a baseball team.

Study: Birmingham could support NBA, NFL, NHL or MLS team - Birmingham Business Journal

Quote:
The study found that Birmingham is one of several markets considered "underextended" when it comes to professional sports teams. In fact, Birmingham had a perfect 100 percent capacity score for the MLS, NBA, NHL and NFL.
It's a major piece of the puzzle and what we'd need to start winning some threads around here. A Chuckie Cheese for grown ups, a place that sells cheap Swedish furniture, and a pro team to get us to the next tie..tee...I can't say it...level.

Which sport shows up first ?

My guess is the NBA. I personally would love to see the NFL here, but how many people would show up for a game on Sunday after cheering for either Bama or Auburn on Saturday?

NBA would be my guess. Low barrier to entry for those.

I can't decide between basketball and soccer being first, and I left hockey out of the poll which shows what I think of that.

At any rate, football attendance was never a problem. It was always the league folding up and not the teams. I went to Stallions, Fire and Thunderbolt games and Legion Field, while never packed like they were for the Iron Bowl or Bama home games, always had good coverage.

Well, given how many show up in Nashville after rooting for Tennessee, New Orleans after rooting for LSU, and Jacksonville after rooting for....never mind. I had some momentum there for a minute.

But, in truth, average attendance for an NFL game is 67,509.

While I figure if you got a few Harberts, Stephens and Drummonds to chip in they could buy practically anything, I agree that a basketball team is probably the most likely considering the way the NFL works. I just don't think soccer is popular enough.

No. My own son played for 13 years and he can't even be bothered to follow it.

Im not saying its impossible, its just a question that I've always had when talking about an NFL team here. If a team is consistently winning it shouldn't be that hard to get people to show up for the games.

NHL is the only one worth following.

Alabama's problem is its really close to Atlanta and they have most if not all the major sports, not a big NHL guy so I don't follow it anyway. Alabama will always be a college football state, SEC football and SEC baseball and even SEC basketball is pretty amazing to following.. I like college sports better than pro sports anyway even thou I still follow all pro sports pretty closely.
