We know at some point, ALDOT is going to have to address the situation. Unfortunate thing for them is that it's a concrete surface instead of asphalt. Which means a more "difficult" approach for them. You just can't put asphalt on top of concrete. So basically, they would have to break up the old concrete surface and hopefully repaved with asphalt instead of concrete. The worrisome question for them is what to do with traffic. Do you close that entire stretch, shut down lanes at a time or re-route traffic to Hwy 31 through Vestavia and Homewood (which I doubt those two would even come close to agreeing with), or use I-459 as a detour avenue around it.
Back in the beginning of Interstates - in the 1950s - weren't all the Interstates being built of concrete? Maybe they were just in urban areas with asphalt in rural areas. But I remember as a youngster seeing ads for a "new type" concrete with air bubbles that didn't require expansion joints. Maybe that was just an advertisement but not factual, but it was in things like Life and Popular Mechanic magazines. That was the first I'd heard of a national Interstate system. Can you imagine us not having a nationwide freeway system now?

yeah, i've wondered what drives the decision between concrete and asphalt on the interstate system.

I hope if 65 south ever is closed due to construction that a flyover at 280/459 is done that way the huge amounts of traffic heading southeast bound won't have to stop to allow traffic to turn left.

yeah, that flyover would do wonders. i think that alone might do more for 280 than all these other small measures they've been doing over the years.

It seems maybe not. There could be over $369 million towards building the north beltway out of the new infrastructure bill.

Though oddly enough the route is labeled as Alabama 959 in the embedded video showing the route. Perhaps ALDoT now plans to build as a state highway to reduce environmental requirements like Tennessee did with SR 840.

Apparently still on track for completion in 2054.

How much does 369 million get anyway? It'll take billions to do the whole thing.

I think that was a number just thrown out there. I imagine it would be way more than that.
