A few major projects I saw...

In 2020...Lakeshore/I-65 interchange rebuilt

In 2024...Adding lanes to I-59 between Valley Road in Fairfield and 18th/19th Street in Bessemer

In 2020...Resurfacing I-59 between 1st Ave. N in Birmingham and I-459

In 2024...Adding lanes on I-59 between 1st Ave. N. in Birmingham and I-459

In 2025...Adding lanes between I-459 and chalkville mountain road in trussville

In 2019...Adding an auxiliary lane on RME between highland ave. and 21st ave. in birmingham

In 2024...Adding lanes on Hwy 78 between Finley Blvd. and Pratt Hwy in Birmingham

Don't think I saw any mentioning of I-65 getting addition lanes from the junction to hwy 31

Did you really think it was getting built?

Come on, they've been talking about the northern bypass before I was alive and we all know it won't be completed until after I'm dead.

If it were to be built, it would be amongst the most inefficient use of funds in DoT history, and that's saying something.

And still, they won't tackle the Numero Uno traffic need in the city . . . flyover ramp for 459S access from 280. I recall them pitching it at one point, had the schematics drawn up, but that was 4-5 years ago. Why the hell they won't prioritize this easy solution is beyond me.

agreed. that would effectively remove all traffic lights at that intersection, right?

Can't they even be bothered to pave the stretch that has already been constructed?

The difficult of I-65 in Birmingham.

We know at some point, ALDOT is going to have to address the situation. Unfortunate thing for them is that it's a concrete surface instead of asphalt. Which means a more "difficult" approach for them. You just can't put asphalt on top of concrete. So basically, they would have to break up the old concrete surface and hopefully repaved with asphalt instead of concrete. The worrisome question for them is what to do with traffic. Do you close that entire stretch, shut down lanes at a time or re-route traffic to Hwy 31 through Vestavia and Homewood (which I doubt those two would even come close to agreeing with), or use I-459 as a detour avenue around it.
