Good point, Canvas Stadium in Ft. Collins, CO, for the Colorado State football team, opened in 2017 with a 41,000 capacity (6,000 less than Protective) and cost $220 million ($45 million more than Protective).

Wow, what caused that to cost $220M? It doesn't appear to be over the top or anything.

That is a good question, I haven't been out there to see a game yet, but I know some CSU alumni that have seen a game there and they say it's really nice. Maybe the construction costs in Colorado are more expensive than Alabama? Maybe under the stands it is super nice?

It does have that cantilever upper deck seating on either side of the field, which could have increased the cost?

When I saw the Protective Stadium drawings, it sort of reminded me of Colorado State's Canvas Stadium, minus the cantilever upper deck.

just looking on google street views, the CSU stadium does look "nicer" in my opinion. not sure what accounts for the extra $50 million though.

Looks like there's a 5 or 6 story office building on the outside along one sideline. Presumably it's for the athletic department, perhaps some others. That could account for the higher price. The seating area doesn't appear to be anything special.

Populous Design Group actually reference Colorado St. stadium in the initial renderings. It's sort of design like that stadium with the exeception being Protective Stadium won't have an upper deck on the home side.

A lot of money was saved with Protective because of the inclined terrain. The northern one third of the stadium did not require the concrete and steel foundational structure. Just grading, blown concrete and rebar.
It must be one of the few stadiums where one can walk from the street level right to the top of the end zone seating. The low profile is working well with all that will be built around the stadium over the next few years.

I think the wow factor will be the huge entry plaza being built on a diagonal with broken areas of steps and landscaping. A great gathering area for many public events that don't involve the stadium. Birmingham can use more public spaces such as that.

That was the plan as well. For it to be use by the public when not in use for events inside of it. More like an open space park, sort of speak.

the stepped plaza on the northeast side does look cool... however, i don't think that will become much of a public park on its own unless you get some other stuff over on that side. unfortunately, topgolf added a parking lot right across from it. i was hoping that street would see more restaurants / bars.

the plaza on the south end is a little more open and flat... i do look forward to how that interacts with CityWalkBHM and Uptown.
