I'm planning on visiting Birmingham to see Sloss Furnaces sometime in the next few weeks and was also wondering if anyone had good recommendations for history books about the city.

Also I'd be interested in reading a novel that's set there too. I'm a big fan of novels as well, and believe that they can present some aspects of an area that history books cannot.

For a fictional novel, I recommend Buffalo Hunting in Alabama by Don Erwin. It largely takes place in Birmingham.

https://www.birminghamtimes.com/2019...res-1819-2019/ is a good start. There are also numerous books on the history of Jefferson County that have a Sloss section. I remember many times driving over the nearby viaduct when the plant was operating.
