Yeah kids are expensive. I do not know how people have more than 3 regardless of how much they make sometimes. I know someone who has 4 kids under 7...no clue what she'll do when it's time to send them to school.

One child is very manageable - both financially and in terms of time investment.
Do you have any children?

Completely unrealistic. They must have been filthy rich, or had a ton of help from a dozen family members. I mean come on...beach days all summer long? Weekends in the White Mountains? Did they live in Downton?

Probably farming off child care, while pretending to give a ..... Or we are talking about family with very young baby, and they are quite portable for the first year or so. Wait till kid figures out how to run.

Did they leave the kid with their butler, or their butler's butler?

Maybe the person referring to their parents in old. Life was different a few decades ago. I can see having beach days all day on the weekends in the summer...but most people work....can't do the beach every day all day. personally I'd get Bored of the beach every day.

The weekends were reserved for the White Mountains. And evenings were apparently consumed by other social events like dinner parties.

These reactions are really bizarre to me. Families have been taking road trips since the invention of the automobile. In fact, the family road trip is one of the most iconic images in all of American pop-culture. Reading these responses, you would think driving to Vermont was equivalent to signing your family up for a space walk.

I think some people have more time than others. A day trip to VT is a lot of driving. I'm going to vt next weekend, it is a 3.5 hr drive to where I'm going and I'm taking a day off from work to do it. The whole point of this thread is why is boston so $$ and basically is it worth it, what are the pluses. People pointed out the nice areas around boston but people came back and said how often do u really have time to get out and see those places especially once you have kids and more responsibility. bottom line for me is that day trips are not worth the expenses we have of living in boston.
