A list of all the permanent closures in the past year.
Some surprising, Some sad, Some expected.

Cantab was sold, and will re open.

Thunder Road... I was never more excited for, then bummed about, a live music venue.

Buks still bums me. People weren't even able to get their mugs.

Slumbrew just wasn't very good. They picked a tricky spot for their taproom. All they really had going was the outdoor site at Assembly.

Great Scott also signed a lease to reopen, or so I heard.

Didn't know about Milky Way.

Do you know if just the Inman location closed, or both?

Last I heard was that Great Scott will be in the Regina spot near the bridge?

Milky way will be taken over by The Haven in Hyde Square, where the OG Milky was.

Teriyaki House and Max Brenner (both Boylston) also closed during the pandemic.

The Buttery's annex on Clarendon has been closed and remains closed, but looks like they're doing construction in there now so I think it will be re-opening soon.

Trophy Room on Chandler/Berkeley also remains closed, not sure if it'll reopen.

I'm torn on most of these - On an individual level, most of these (especially the restaurants) aren't giant losses. The restaurants that hit me hardest are Kamakura which was a beautiful space and a top notch restaurant which was just starting to find its feet, Les Zygomates, Eastern Standard, and The Table at Season to Taste. For bars, venues, Bull McCabe's was a stinger - we used to go quite regularly and I loved the space. The Fours was basically our office's celebration hub and the decor and memorabilia couldn't be beat. Great Scott was tough too, but I think it's coming back.

Of course, the impact is bigger when looking at the collective. These may not have all been great spots, but collectively, this many vacant spaces is a big blow to the city. There are a lot of people whose livelihoods depended on these businesses. That's a bigger deal than my feelings on the individual restaurants/bars/venues.

I'm optimistic about the future though. A good number of these spots have either reopened as other businesses, or have plans to reopen. And many of these places (I'm thinking of places like Lir, Pour House, Whiskey's, McGreevy's, Fenmore, etc.) didn't really have character or a product that can't easily be improved upon by the next owner. I'm hoping (but not overly optimistic) that the loss of revenue will force landlords to shift how they treat restaurant tenants (landlord issues were as big a factor as the pandemic in the instance of some closures), and I'm also hopeful (and even less optimistic) that the city/state will take steps to become more business friendly for restaurants/bars, etc. by permanently reevaluating how we look at things like liquor licensing, happy hours, al fresco/outdoor dining/drinking spaces, to-go cocktails, etc. But following new restaurant openings over the last couple of months has made me a bit more optimistic. Seeing the city coming alive again in the last couple of months has made me very optimistic about restaurant and entertainment options in the city going forward.

*edit* Boston's also getting a Margaritaville this year (in Faneuil Hall, where else?) because of course it is.

Les Zygomates is a real stinger. Such a unique spot.

Yeah, the Kenmore places (did Island Creek close?) are bad for the area.

I never got into Bull McCabes. I did love Tir Na Nog.

Most that closed I never went to, but they served others. Like, I never got the love for The Field. But people obviously liked it.
