We're planning a trip to BVT! Haven't been there in years! But...I heard a rumour that you can't swim in Lake Champlain anymore because it's polluted with sewage?! Is it true?! No more North Beach, no more Leddy Beach?!

What's the deal deal Vermonters?! I don't wanna get my kids psyched up for swimming if it's not gonna happen! Somebody plz give me the accurate 411!

You can still swim in the lake. The water is tested daily (I believe). Occasionally, usually after a big rain they'll have to close the beaches to swimming because of pollution, but those days are few.

It is disgusting, you're right OP. For a bunch of uppity Vermonters and hippies, we sure don't know how to take care of our wonderful lake.

I've never seen the lake closed this much until this summer and I've been going for the past 20 years.

Those beaches are disgusting in general though, if you want a nice beach in this area, go to Charlotte Beach, Ferrisburgh Beach, or even Oakledge. Although, Oakledge has been closed several times this summer also.

I use to come up to the area a lot 10-15 years ago and swim at North Beach. When I first moved here I wasn't aware how bad the pollution was in the Lake. 2019 was bad, this summer was even worse. I took the Grand Isle/Plattsburgh ferry recently, it has a green film over the water most of the way, the shoreline was all choked with weeds, particularly around Sand Bar State Park which has a lot more weeds than sand. The smell of the lake is very potent, almost like an inland sea. This is not how I remember the lake in years past not that long ago.

The lake is an attraction for local tourism, one would think Vermont and especially the city of Burlington with ongoing sewage dumping would be more a lot cognizant of the water quality. What a shame as it's such a beautiful lake.

Ha! Water quality is far superior to what it used to be when I first started going there in the '60s and '70s. There's still a big problem with farm runoff, inadequate septic systems, and urban runoff. Lots of rain exacerbates all of them.

All of the above. Yes, to runoff being an issue and yes, one would think Burlingtonites would want to solve this problem asap.

I managed to go to the beach all through July as we had beach weather then, but toward the end, beaches were closed due to toxic algae blooms, and in the beginning, the pollen films were problematic.

And then, the last time I went paddleboarding was just awful. I have no idea what happened, I think sewage just keeps getting dumped in unchecked.
