We are gearing up to travel with our young family cross country and looking ahead at campgrounds. What has your experience been with KOA's? Should I stay KOA or are private own campground better?
Get a membership to the Good Sam Club, buy the campground directory from them and use their services to look at reviews. They have people that actually have seen the campground rate them and we always found the Good Sam ratings reliable. KOA can be nice but they are usually a little more to a lot more expensive but generally in a really handy location next to major roads so are a good choice for overnight.
Private campgrounds can have varying quality. I've stayed in some that were little more than a field with some portajohns. Some turned out to be RV parks. IMHO KoA has certain standards which make them a bit more predictable
Are you going to be tenting? KOAs are nice for the Kamping Kabins. We;ve loved those when camping with kids. KoA memberships are worthwhile.
I've no experience with Good Sam, so I can't compare.

Any feedback or opionions are appreciated.
What do other prefer when looking for a camp site? Do you look at reviews, locations, KOA or good Sam. Or do you like the small family owned parks?
I've had poor experiences with KOA, the ones I've stopped at had people living in old broke down rv's, one experience was while I was in paying for a spot the other campers or livers were trying to see what I had in the back of my truck, I got my money back and left turn right down the road. I prefer State or county camp grounds myself.

Q: Did you report that KOA to KOA Corporate franchisor Department, so that could follow up and make sure they follow/enforce/De-Flag that location?

Nope, they can run it however they want, I would never stay there.
