I have three Canadian friends that I meet in college. Two of the three would constantly say passive aggressive comments about the US. For instance, they would constantly say negative things about our love of guns, religion, race-obsession, ect. It would get a little annoying but at the end of the day they liked the USA. My other friend had nothing but positive things to say about the USA. He is obsessed with a lot of American culture though. Loves Football, rap, basketball, and American TV shows....so he obviously decided to study in the USA so he could get more immersed in US culture. I've asked them how people back home thought about Americans and they didn't say anything negative. All in all, I can't say that my friends represent an entire country, but I think their view of Americans was no different than others in Canada. To say that Canadians hate Americans would be absolutely absurd. I think it's more of a love-hate relationship from both sides.
Canadians don't hate Americans. On my travels through the US, I have met many, individually, and have found them to be warm, welcoming people; who are often curious about my homeland. We can laugh at the same jokes, we have the same cultural references (mostly), and we have a friendly sports rivalry.
But what bugs us in this forum is the tiny minority of Americans who come into this forum to tell us how much better than us they are. Oh, they go on about how we rely on them in all ways, how we're being ripped off by high prices, how they're not subjects of the Queen like they think we are (FYI, constitutionally-speaking, Canadians are not British subjects but Canadian citizens), and how they're not "socialist" (really? with all those publicly-funded elementary- and high-schools, police departments, fire departments, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, VA, food stamps, state universities, and anything else the municipal/state/federal government decides to allow them to have).
This tiny minority's ignorance is amazing. They have no knowledge of how the US and Canada have cooperated over the years. From joint North American defense (see, e.g., NORAD), to large projects like the St. Lawrence Seaway, to the Canadian aerospace engineers who helped NASA put a man on the moon. But it's not just those big things; and they can be excused for not knowing the small things: like a fire department in St. Stephen NB that responds to fire calls in Calais, ME, or the Americans who helpfully throw the ball back across the border when a batter in Coutts, AB hits one over the fence into Sweetgrass, MT.
They especially don't know how our peoples have mixed and integrated over the years--anecdotes are never data, but I've counted relatives in our family tree who hail from such places as California, Nevada, New Jersey, and Ohio. Heck, my ex-wife was originally from Colorado, and even though we split, she still lives in Canada; and in reverse, a couple of our semi-regular posters are Canadians who make their home in the US now.
With such integration, how can we hate Americans? They are our friends and neighbours ("neighbors," to be polite to our American friend). We may not always agree with what the US wants to do, and I think we ought to be allowed to express ourselves in that regard, and I think our representatives should negotiate in good faith with American representatives on topics on which we disagree. But in the end, Americans are fine people, and I am pleased to count many Americans as among my friends.
Aside to Oakvillegirly: Just some friendly advice--tone down the rhetoric, get out of Oakville, and see the rest of Canada. As one who has been coast-to-coast a couple of times, I can assure you that the demographics you attribute to the GTA do not occur in the rest of Canada.

Not speaking to the rhetoric here Chevy but If you read Manitopiaa's post he singled out Toronto quite a bit and in a rather arbitrary fashion. It was first an anti Canada rant and then he just had to get into into a bunch of stereotypical attitudes he attributes to Toronto on top of those about Canada. I also said in my response to him that over 50 percent of Torontonians are not born in Toronto simply because he singled out the city and always does for no particular good reason. Most Torontonians reading this stuff (if they did - they don't) would laugh and scratch their heads at his complete and total ignorance of the city. As most Canadians in here are left scratching their heads at this poster. Regardless of his constant anti Toronto and anti Canada rants, they are largely uncalled for, completely generalized and not at all representative of the city/cities and country he constantly maligns.
It shouldn't matter that the demographics of Toronto and the GTA are different from the rest of Canada - the fact is he is almost always targeting both with a particular emphasis on Toronto (though he does throw that Montreal video around a lot) more than any other city in the country and of course the country itself.
His dogma attracts a certain group of people in here who will buy into it and be cheerleaders for it. For the rest who are hopefully open minded they will see through this stuff. As most would about the anti American sentiment shown by some Canadians. I'm not sure what is at the root of his commentary but whatever it is its certainly not a healthy mindset when you launch into any generalized tirade against any place, either a City or country or any region for that matter.
Yeah, I hate the U.S. I don't hate Americans though. There is a huge difference. Majority of the word hates the U.S., not just "Canadian nationalists" as you claim.
Everyone hates the U.S. but loves using American products, media, and websites like this site based in Illinois.... .

I doubt it. Hobbesdj mentioned many times he was African-American. Manitopiaa has hinted that he is Mexican-American, or at least Hispanic if I recall.
Most of the Americans I've met on my trip to the U.S. are very friendly. Perhaps not as polite as Canadians, but definitely friendly and maybe even friendlier than Canadians. The stereotypes aren't all true. Of course there are a few who are ignorant about other countries in the world and who are loud, etc. But most of the people are nice. It's a shame they live in a bad, corrupt country though.
