Canada-EU trade talks with Wallonia collapse as Freeland heads home - Politics - CBC News

Quote:
Speaking outside the seat of the Walloon government, Ms Freeland told reporters: "It seems evident for me and for Canada that the European Union is not now capable of having an international accord even with a country that has values as European as Canada."

She added: "Canada is disappointed, but I think it is impossible."

It's ironic that Wallonie would be the one to scupper this deal as it's a French speaking region, they would have had more opportunities to benefit from trade then most other parts of Europe! As a Canadian, I am very disappointed in Europe. Our federation was founded primarily by people from a variety of European countries and European civilization is still the foundation our state is built on. I've always thought we should be closer to, and trade more with Europe rather than be so heavily integrated only with other North American states. It's unfortunate it came to this, there was give and take from both sides in those 8 years of negotiations, you can't get every little thing you want in a negotiation, you need to compromise. If the EU isn't capable of doing that, then it's too dysfunctional an entity to continue.

Very interesting development and will only opine that it is a rare occasion indeed where Canada asserts itself in such a manner.

We usually read stories where we've bent over and taken it sideways until the other entity gets tired and compromises in some manner.

Kudos to our negotiators for deciding enough is freak'n enough and saying so in such a forthright manner.

Agreed. Now that they know they whole deal can be blown, they might come back.

"An EU source in Ottawa said Friday that it does not consider this the end of the process."

What's going on with the trade deal isn't really about Canada and its relations with or image in Europe.

It's about stuff that is going on in Europe and Belgium. CETA is just a lightning rod that some malcontents have latched onto.
