$5B Windsor electric battery plant the largest private sector investment in Ontario’s history.

An amazing investment for the city of Windsor that will secure its position as the auto mobility capital of Canada. 2,500 direct jobs and up to 10,000 spinoff jobs are expected that will provide a significant boost to the local economy and population growth rates for years to come.

Heard about this on the late news last night. Those guys pictured in the article sure look overjoyed at the prospect of it. Well, good for them and their foresight and I think they all deserve congratulations and pats on the back.

Was Windsor chosen because of its proximity to Detroit? Automotive still being quite present in Detroit.

Windsor was chosen because it has all of the requirements that were needed to get the plant up and running in two years. Plus the region has the largest tool and die and automotive feeder plants in Canada, so the cluster of these types of businesses really helps to lure more investment. The proximity to Detroit is also a huge plus, as the automotive in the whole Windsor-Detroit region is very integrated.

Yes, but a battery itself isn't really that useful unless you have a car to put it into. So, batteries from Windsor in cars from Detroit. Why haul heavy batteries all the way through North America when Detroit and Windsor are that close?

So, Windsor likely was selected because of its proximity to Detroit.

Whether the batteries are from Windsor or elsewhere makes no difference because no matter where they came from in the first place the batteries will still all have to be hauled all the way through North America either individually in new vehicles or in bulk shipments just as fresh from the factory cars are.

If you read the article it explains why that particular plant is going up in that particular central location (central to all of North America) and that the location already has everything the plant needs to get rolling quickly and it has the right kind of land surrounding it ready for future expansions of the plant. Take note also that this plant happens to be only the first and largest of 13 such battery plants that they have in the works and they'll all be located in various locations across North America.

I agree but those 13 battery plants are probably all located in close proximity to car manufacturing hubs just like Windsor is close to Detroit. VW and Toyota have car factories up south so they build battery plants close up there too.

I wonder why they chose Windsor and not Flint for example. Flint has more than plenty of empty space, is still close to Detroit, and needs the plant and jobs much more than Windsor does.

They chose Windsor because they had the best offerings to choose from and they had the best package put together.

Stellantis wants this first big one in Canada, not in USA, and Windsor is already a vehicle manufacturing and assembly hub in its own right anyway. Stellantis has several other plants in USA (as well as in many other countries) and Stellantis already has 2 vehicle assembly plants of its own in Windsor. I have no doubt that Stellantis will also be producing batteries for the vehicles that they're producing in their assembly plants in Windsor as well as for vehicles in their other assembly plants in USA and other countries.

Canada also has free trade agreements which the U.S. does not have i.e. with the EU and with CPTPP.

I think one thing the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have both highlighted - the importance of supply chain resiliency.
