For a small country population wise there is a lot of gangs.

You still have an Italian mafia in GTA. You have a lot of biker gangs like the US. In Vanco there is the Independent Soldiers, and Red Scorpions. Montreal seems to have quieted down for a bit. There are asian gangs like Chin Pac, and Asian Assassins.

How often do you hear about them on the news? I once did a thread not too long ago asking whether the world follows all the negative news in US about the shootings and violence, and rioting/looting. A Canadien chimed in a said Canadiens find it horrible, and wont even vacay to US anymore. Are you own native gangs tame in comparison? I dont get much Canada news but from what I can see from YT is some of the acts of violence are quite Brazen.

Here are some examples

There is more than that. There are hundreds of gangs across Canada, the majority of the gangs seem to be most occupied with making war on each other and/or causing internal attrition instead of more impact on the common public. We hear about them mostly when they've been killing each other or when the police forces have taken down groups and seized illegal contraband and drugs.

If you're looking for more information about the types and natures of the gangs, their numbers and locations this wiki page is up-to-date as of January 27, 2023:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangs_...%20of%20Canada

and this information specifically about youth gangs is up-to-date as of August 2022:

https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/r.../index-en.aspx

And this report from 2018 from the RCMP: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/gazette/gangs

There is more information of course but you'd have to do some extensive internet searching to understand the full scope of the hierarchy, rankings and cultures of Canada's gang organizations and their activities in specific areas.

Judging ones safety when visiting, shouldn't be by just watching a few videos.

Look at the statistic of murders, shooting etc per capita.

I think we all know which place is safer.

Canada has a very predominantly urban population, so that's at least part of the explanation.

Even though I don't think Canada's cities are particularly overrun buy gangs. But I suppose that people who expect us to have none (due to the placid Canada image) might be surprised that we have some.

My take on gangs in central Canadian cities:

Organized crime in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto for a long time was dominated by the Italian mafia. They're still around but the police cracked down on them and they've been quieter, at least in terms of violent crime.

Montreal also has criminal biker gangs who were made up of French Canadian Québécois members primarily. They were hit hard in the 90s by dedicated police squads to break them up. They're still around but less powerful.

Montreal has seen an upsurge of Afro-Caribbean gang activity in recent years. Many of the members are of Haitian origin.

Gangs in Toronto and Ottawa were historically Afro-Caribbean mostly (especially Jamaican) but in recent years a lot of the gang crime has involved young men with origins in the "Horn of Africa", ie Somalia.

Toronto's Little Italy is centered on College Street West. It extends roughly north to Bloor Street West, between Ossington Avenue and Bathurst Street.

I don't know if it's still there, but when I lived in Toronto, there was a coffee shop in that neighbourhood that you did not go into unless you were both Italian and a mobster. But there are plenty of other great eateries in the neighbourhood, so there was never any need to go into that coffee shop.

Yeah, and the police really smashed them when they stepped over the line. The straw that broke the camel's back is widely thought to be the killing of a little boy (Daniel Desrochers) walking down the street in east end Montreal. Happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when a bomb went off in a biker gang member's jeep as Desrochers walked by. The biker was killed and so was the boy.
