No, most, especially the big haitian community, is in the NE. In Montreal-Nord, St-Michel and RDP. While in the west (NDG, CDN and Little burgundy) it is mostly small pockets here and there.
LaSalle has a pretty large number of black residents.

Yes i agree, there are pockets in LaSalle with a fairly good number of black residents. Some caribbean shops and restaurants can be found on Lafleur street and many people reside on or around Airly avenue.
What surprised me at the time was how long the Black community has been there and where the descendants of that Black community came from.
The Black history goes back sum 200 years, (Canada Nova Scotia) Much longer most than people realise.
All cultures add to the multicultural mosaic that gives Toronto its multinational vibrancy thru restaurants, events, ambiance of neighbourhoods.
Every arrival should be welcomed as they want the same things for their families we do. Home ownership, job opportunities, improved lifestyle and standard of living, education for their children.

Actually, the Black Nova Scotian community goes back to about the 1780's. Birchtown was the first free Black community in North America too.

That section of Airlie that you mentioned has taken a real nosedive. Most businesses that used to be there have gone.
An old-timer once told me that when many of the apartment buildings on Airlie were built, they were really nice and that one or two hockey players used to live there.

I agree that the Airlie area is pretty run down and it is unfortunate because it would be interesting to have a healthy and well established carribean population with business's and local cultural landmark. Some of the empty lots should be filled with more appartment buildings, nicer ones, that would densify the neighborhood and help the business's. Of course i would also add a police station right in there to bring some safety back.
Do most Canadian black neighborhoods have a low crime rate? Here in the US there are a few black middle class neighborhoods but most are poor with high crimes and they have little education and poor job opportunities. It is an atrosity. The US is so racist and our cities mostly segregated.

While I understand your point, that's not completely true. As far as I know in Canada, even the roughest neighborhoods aren't as bad as our here in the states. They have similar neighborhoods like you brought up in Canada with high minority populations, but there are some that are nice too. There are even some Black communities in rural settings in Canada like Preston(especially almost all Black North Preston) in Nova Scotia and some in Southwestern Ontario too. There are a few more in other parts of the country as well.
