“Illinois is getting ready for some changes in 2023 that include eliminating its cash bail system. Proponents of the law said it’s wrong to keep people locked up simply because they can’t afford bail.

According to Sheriff Sopczak, fewer suspects will end up going to jail. Only suspects involved in specific deadly incidents could be held.“ - https://www.ky3.com/2022/09/09/gates...outputType=amp

What do you think about this new law? Do you really think it’s going to be like The Purge movie in IL?

I think the "purge" comments are nothing but hyperbole by right winger fearmongers. No different from the "Chicago is a warzone" comments from people who have never even been to Chicago before.

With that said, it is a terrible idea. Not sure what Pritzker is thinking but I highly doubt this will help his chances at re election.

Illinois sure loves to treat thugs like kings which is why nobody in Illinois has the right to cry about chiraq being a warzone. They voted for it to be what it is.

Chicago already has the worst crime reputation of any major city. This will not help at all, and will only hurt. Chicago was my dream city as a kid, but I have decided I will not purchase a home here or be here long term, solely because of the crime. Decisions like this have convinced me that the crime issue will never turn around because of the state and city leadership.

I didn't vote for this, now I'm stuck voting for some downstate ultra conservative in 2 months; as I refuse to support the incumbent.
While cash bail has been abused in the past, it also motivates defendants to appear in court. Now they won't bother, until they are arrested again.

Whatever happened to the old saying "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime"?

If poor people don't want to be locked up, don't do bad things. It really is that simple...

This is a non-issue designed to do exactly what it's doing--get igorant people riled up. I can't wait for some of these media outlets to get what's coming to them.

I'm curious, why is this a non issue? First state in the nation to end cash bail. That seems like a pretty big deal. What makes this a non issue?
