Hi folks. We will be heading down south in a few months and are considering taking a new route. (coming down from Maine - likely staying in Dover, DE area first night) Norfolk onto 158 down thru NC along the coast (Kill Devil Hills and such), over to #264 to 17 into New Bern. And likely 17 right to the end

The ending stop is in the Beaufort, SC area. Any thoughts on this route? Well likely stay along the coast route right down to the final destination.

Maybe New Bern for a couple of nights?

- Fun or interesting stops along the way
- Yarn Shops
- Bakeries
- Candy Shops
- Pleasant Walkways / walking paths
- Places to eat
- Places to stay

Thank you in advance

Highway 17 is a decent alternative to Interstate 95. It can look like a boring, multi-lane highway at times, but it does have attractions. They Tryon Palace and the Pepsi museum are worth spending a couple days in New Bern.

I can speak about a couple of yarns shops in the area: The Salty Sheep in Swansboro and The Wicked Stitch in Hampstead. There is also Yarn Tales in New Bern, although I have not been there.

The best restaurants will feature native seafood: look for shrimp and oysters.

Thank you. We've been to New Bern a few times over the years, as our daughters husband is a marine and they were stationed in New Bern at one time. It's been about 8-10 years since we were there last. We liked the area which is why we might stay there a few nights. It's likely to be a lot different from the last time there, but still seems like a nice lay-over.

Yeah, the Misses really likes the Salty Sheep in Swansboro as well as a soup she got at a nice restaurant just down the street

Take 158 and stay in Manteo. Follow 264 from 64 and then go through Bath and hop the ferry at Bayview. Follow through Pamlico Co, stay in Oriental and then hop the Minnesott Beach ferry and go through Beaufort NC and then use 24 to Jacksonville and work your way to Wilmington. Stay downtown in Wilmington

Manteo
Oriental
Wilmington

New Bern is ok, the drive is not the same as the way I am telling you at all. If you want to get a sense of the coast of NC, follow the route above.

Allow extra time for traffic backups on 17 between Jacksonville and Wilmington, which also isn't scenic. You may make better time taking 53 to I-40 for that segment.

Lots to see along 17 not including all the vehicles. Drive safely, most move fast…..

It was nice and actually reasonable low on the traffic. Way less then on #95 for sure. We ended up taking 17 for the most of the way. We took 264 the whole way,,and damn is that out in the middle of NOWHERE! That road we wouldn't take again. Peaceful enough, but only because there is NOTHING for some 60+ miles

Thank you to all who committed on this trip we took. Always a pleasure posting here for all of our trips.

Our return trip (in 4 weeks) is looking like we'll head up to Blue Ridge GA and then make our way back to Maine from there. Likely stop in Intercourse, PA

If you are referring to 264 in eastern Beaufort and Hyde County, I agree, if anyone wants to experience the middle of nowhere, that stretch is a good choice! Caveat -- in the warmer months do NOT roll down your windows in that area or you will experience a hoard of mosquitoes of a size and ferocity such that I have never encountered anywhere else.
