It's true they do promote it as diverse, but I think it's just around the Salt Lake area.

It's been 30+ years since I lived in SLC as a grad student at the U of Utah, but I think many of the things I saw there are still true of the state today. Even in those days SLC was majority non-LDS and almost none of my fellow students were. There was a pretty thriving counter-culture; people chugged coffee and beer, there were good independent bookstores to go along with the ones that stocked LDS-approved books, a decent selection of ethnic restaurants, etc. But, people I knew who had kids also told me stories about how all the scout troops were run by the LDS church, kids who weren't LDS were very much outsiders with their schoolmates, etc. At least one guy I worked with left the state primarily because he wanted to ease the social situation for his kids and make sure they had access to non-religious youth activities.

Provo had the reputation of being home to the True Believers, and in rural southern Utah, there were a lot of what they called "Jack Mormons", who were officially LDS because everybody was, but who weren't so over-the-top pious and righteous about it. They drank coffee and beer too, cracked jokes about their polygamist ancestors, etc.

Many of the suburbs of SLC remind me of Las Vegas except with more grass lawns and no locals casinos. Pretty much the same concept, you can be LDS and mingle with the non-faithful, just aren't supposed to partake in their vices. How many living like that do you think don't partake in any of their vices?

I had a coworker in Las Vegas who was LDS and on the outside appeared like it, 5 kids, drove a minivan, most of his vacations were to go back to see family in Utah, etc. But when he was in the office with us the guy drank multiple cans of Mountain Dew (he'd buy 12-packs during his lunch hour), took part in our football betting pools and would "grade" women on a scale of 1-10. The office was his escape from being devout. He said he had to clean up his act when he went to see family because they lived in Provo and went to church twice a week. He'd get jealous when we would tell him about our vacations.

Exactly. Just head to Wendover on any given weekend night and see who the clientele is.

When I visited different parts of NV in the mid-90s, several people told me that most of NV is owned/managed by Mormons.

My one night in Las Vegas was at the MGM Grand and I found myself thinking that the room numbering system for that giant hotel seemed to be based on how SLC has its street grids set up.

LOL! I think you're drawing a correlation where there is none.
