With the latest Carnival problem in St Martin my group has decided not to cruise in 2013. We will spend our vacation money in another way. Do others feel this way?
Why not? Maybe I wouldn't travel on Carnival ... but what do their problems have to do with other cruise lines?

You sound like my father who won't go an a cruise because they have buffets, and thinks he'd eat too much. I've been on many cruises, and never been in the casino. I've seen people on here who've talked about thousands of dollars bar tabs at the end of the cruise. I don't do that, either. I don't care what other passengers are stupid enough to do. I either have some self-control ... or else it's that I don't care about wasting my money on such things.

I've had a thousand dollar bar tab, and I've had a $30 bar tab. What does it matter to you? I can afford it. I budget that into the cruise cost--and I don't consider it stupid, but rather a very enjoyable vacation.
By the way, that $1000 wasn't spent on the drink of the day but rather nice bottles of wine. It's not a waste of money to me, but buying an expensive SUV or cruising on a crappy cruise line sure is.

Nothing should be considered a waste of money if we are enjoying what we are doing. To some, the casino is the answer, to me, nope cause the odds are more against us than even in NV, To some a good bottle of wine is the answer and to others the spa or maybe specialty dining. The only time I think something is stupid is when I am sorry, after the fact I indulged, regardless of what we are referring to. I agree with you and I hope you continue to enjoy that bottle of wine..

It doesn't matter to me if you want to waste your money by drinking yourself into a stupor. But I can still think it's a stupid thing to do, can't I?
I've only been on one cruise and it was Carnival. It was fun but I think 5 days is my limit. I didn't play in the casino and, as a foodie, found the offerings mediocre so didn't over indulge. Buffets? Hate them, they never have anything worth the calories. The dining room served up some nice things for dinner though. I saw the headliner shows each night, played games led by the activities director, had cocktails in the cigar lounge each evening while chatting up the young Russian bartender, visited ports-o-call, but mostly visited with relatives I hadn't seen in awhle (and some I'd never met!) because it was an anniversary cruise that everyone was invited to. On their own dime of course.
I'd go again with the right person/persons if they wanted to, but I don't care if I ever do it again or not.

You missed the point. I didn't drink myself into a stupor. My husband and I had a nice bottle of wine with dinner each night. We can easily afford the enjoyment, so it's not a waste of money.
Being able to afford something doesn't mean it's still not a waste of money. And even if it's a "nice bottle of wine," in my experience you pay even more on a cruise ship for things such as that as you'd pay on land. Making it an even bigger waste. IMO.

Again, as I have said before, I have to disagree with you on this one: I agree the wine or whatever is marked up as much as 3 times on a ship, but if someone can afford to indulge themselves and they want to spend that kind of money it is not a waste. We don't do the spa package because we prefer to spend our money on other things, our daughter and son in law do it on every cruise.. It isn't a waste to them...None of us can judge what is wasting money for someone else...

Very true. Not everyone has or should have the same view as everyone else on what is important to himself. I literally felt pain in my stomach when I lose $20 in a casino, therefore, to me, any amount spending in gambling is a waste of money. OTOH, it would not bother me to pay $120 for a bottle of aged single malt so I don't think it's wasteful at all.
The way I see it, the good thing about money is it can be used to obtain the many pleasures of life. As long as the pleasures are not illegal or immoral, there is nothing wrong of spending a little or a lot of money to acquire them.
