OK, rdlr, I live within the general area I'm talking about. Locally the only crime that has occurred here in the last four years of which I'm aware has been a couple of incidents of stealing or attempted theft of copper guttering or flashing, and a couple of acts of petty vandalism (breaking out glass panes in yard lights). I'm talking about crime committed in these neighborhoods now.

At nearby shopping areas in Greenville there have been a few purse snatchings or muggings of elderly persons and one robbery or attempted robbery of an ATM customer. In an entirely different area on the opposite side of Lancaster Pike there was a home invasion/murder of a young woman alone at home on a rather isolated street of upscale houses, definitely the worst thing that has happened in this broad area of town in the years I've lived here (though again it was a few miles from where we live).

Just wanted to add that Westover Hills and the adjacent neighborhoods in the county are probably also helped by the location of a New Castle Co. police substation on Dupont Rd, just off Pennsylvania Ave/Kennett Pike. The New Castle Co police hang out at strategic corners in the neighborhoods to catch and discourage speeders and stop-sign runners, and also patrol the neighborhoods, esp the immediately adjacent section of Westover Hills.

Well...police presence should and might make a difference. In the City of Dover's west side, police on foot, patrol that area almost 24 hours/day. In Camden-Wyoming they're visible on foot most days. The neighborhood watch groups help.

Stuck in our front door today, was a nice holiday note from police departments in Camden-Wyoming. They outlined a few holiday safety tips, and indicated that if anybody in these towns are going away for the holiday, let the police departments know. They'll keep an eye on our house, and check daily to see if all our doors are locked, and if there's anything different going on around our house. .... certainly, a benefit of living in a small town.
