I also wonder about a bridge. I don't understand why he is going straight to dentures instead of bridges. Could be none of his teeth are good.
His sound like neglect for sure unlike mine which are genetic.
You're very lucky you have good teeth. Your parents didn't see a dentist until they were older most likely. My dad didn't either but he had perfect teeth until they pulled them at 67, seems like it snow balled after being diabetic.
