Iowa doesn't have a huge black population, but there are around 85,000. The black population is growing faster as a % than the total population.

I believe there are well over 250,000 minorities in Iowa as of 2008.

American culture is materialistic, ignorant and full of baffoonery in many ways. People from other continents come to America and they are doing a constant "WTF?" at the culture. It's normal and very understandable that they might scoff a bit at the average rude American.

Great comments! I rated your post! IMO, American culture is at its lowest in history right now and what is attempting to pass itself off currently as "African-Americans culture" is running neck and neck with any ancient biblical nation that was destroyed by the wrath of God. Blatant sexual immorality, lewdness, materialism, selfishness, greed, blasphemous speech and actions, arrogant, rude, offensive, profanity, hatred, consuming anger, corruption, sexual disease, not taking responsibility, lack of accountability, creating families through bastardization, BAFFOONERY, anti-intellectualism, criminal acceptance, and the list goes on and on, has threatened to completely dominate the culture. It's sad.

You all are scaring me. I'm from Harlem, NYC, and am flying into Des Moines on Wednesday for a position. I've lived in Kansas (got my law degree from KU) so I have somewhat of an understanding. Looking at living in Des Moines as opposed to the town where I'm being interviewed at, Oskaloosa. (1% black, not doing that anymore).

IMO its not just "African American Culture" that can be labeled as such. To be honest its American culture across the board. It doesn't matter if your black, white, brown, yellow, and etc. That long list you have created is ridiculous. If you think that list equates to African American culture you don't know much.

From reading this thread, it seems to me like PghDiva isn't too much better off than the people she's describing.

Yeah, she's right, it's pretty messed up for people to shun her, look at her rudely, or "look down" on her.

But she turned right back around and started looking down on them by talking about their clothing, hairstyles, barbers, etc.

Based on that, for all we know they could have caught a vibe from you that you didnt like them and they responded the same way.

Either way, all I see here is that it looks like someone with snobbish behavior is mad about other's snobbish behavior. Pot meet kettle.

No, it's not just African-Amer culture that can be labeled as such but you'll cross paths with a greater percentage of African-Americans exhibiting that behavior in PUBLIC than you will other races/nationalities. My list isn't ridiculous, it's realistic. There's no political correctness or phony-code-words-to-talk-around-the-issue in my list. I've been African-American all of my life thus far, I work in Harlem. I think those two factors alone gives me some credibility on Black culture.

I don't think it's a race issue as much as it is a culture issue. African blacks (somalians, sudanese) are way more conservative. A lot of them grew up in a culture where women were there to cook, and give birth. They are treated more like property, than humans. When they come to America and see a professional, intelligent, articulate black woman like you appear to be, they don't know what to think. Maybe they are intimidated. Your best bet is to just be yourself, and say "F" them. Tell them, you are in America now, learn to adapt. You will make plenty of friends, and be accepted. If they don't like that, their loss. Good luck.

I'm currently living in Chicago but will like to move to Iowa with my children. Can someone tell me where the good schools and neighborhoods are? I will like to move somewhere where the stores, schools, and dentist and doctor's office isn't far. How will you compare Iowa to Chicago? Thanks everyone

I live in the Quad Cities (Davenport), and we have a LOT of ex Chicago residents here. It's a decent size metro area, around 350,000, not huge, but big enough where you will find the major stores, restaurants, entertainment.

The schools here are pretty good. Most high schools have between 1220 to 2000 students. My graduating class had a Miss Iowa, who competed in Miss America, and graduated from Princeton with honors. We also had professional athletes, and Ivy league graduates. Assumption is the main private school in Davenport, but it has pretty expensive tuition.

As far as neighborhoods, there aren't many bad neighborhoods, nothing compared to parts of Chicago I've been through. South of Locust street, headed towards downtown can get kind of rough and run down.

It's hard to compare a city of a few million to a city of a hundred thousand. It's a more laid back slower pace. Not many traffic jams unless there is an accident, or construction. Crime rate is a little above average, but not bad. One good thing about the QC is we do have a lot of national chain stores and restaurants that you will find in Chicago, but we also have a lot of great local restaurants, if you look for them.

There's two main hospitals here Genesis East and West. East is in the top 10 heart institutes in the country. There are plenty of smaller doctor and dentists offices spread throughout the city.

QC is also located right off I-80 and I-88, so its an easy 2 1/2 hour drive to chicago.

Yeah Atlanta has some Ol Skool folk and they are the ones born and raised there, they did'nt migrate to the A. My thing is... no matter where you coming from... respect and integrity is deserved and especially when you give it out.

Oh and Mr. the barber references you gave me... they can't cut at all!!! I appreciate the help, but I am still searching. Lol!
My my my aren't you an uppity negro. Ever wondered why even black kids are killing each other up and down the country and even here in the UK where I am? It's because of this 'I am better than you ' attitude so prevelant amongst blacks. Some of us aren't happy unless we are cutting another sista or brotha down. The house negro and field negro mentality is still amongst us.

Get over yourself.
