I watched my weight and counted my calories during the winter of 2001-2002. Aside from school lunch, most of the time I only ate things with the total calories labeled on them. I remember eating Chunky soups and breakfast cereal, and closely watching my portions in order to eat no more than 1400 - 1700 calories.

I lost a total of 25 pounds in about 2.5 months.

Of course, I gained much of it back.

Have you ever had success this way?

The problem with packaged foods is their sodium levels which are usually through the roof. You can do much better by eating whole, fresh, unprocessed foods.

I agree, not to mention the long list of unidentifiable ingredients in such products. I lost weight by calorie counting but I rarely eat packaged foods. I used an app on my phone to keep track of calories and it worked for me. Sure, prepackaged food makes calorie counting easier but it makes your diet much less healthy than preparing foods yourself.

Aren't those diets from Jenny Craig and NutriSystem sort of all processed foods?

They're not just sort of processed. They're most definitely processed. There's no reason why processed foods can't help you lose weight. There -is- reason why eating processed foods consistently is a bad idea, and that is the health issue, not the weight issue. Sodium levels and artificial ingredients (flavorings, fillers, colorants) are at a peak with these types of foods.

They're usually also jam-packed with gluten and soy, which may be problematic for some people.

Your body is a very intricate, complicated, perfectly tuned machine out of the box. When you don't care for that machine and fuel it with the foods it was designed to run on, you're going to eff it up in a big way. When it's not running correctly and efficiently, you're going to be fat and unhealthy. Period. Processed foods were definitely NOT in the design plan.
