IMO. I tend to agree not much has changed since the late 90's. If someone from 1999 was teleported, they wouldn't stick out.
I agree with this but somebody teleported from 1999 wearing the casual fashion of the time would not stick out in any of the decades of the past 50 years. The problem with this is that most of late '90s fashion was so minimalist and nondescript, only the flamboyant and loud fashions tend to stick out and the late '60s/'70s and to a lesser degree the late '80s/early '90s dated a lot quicker because of that. But some fashions even from 1999 have dated like the frost spiked blond tips, bootcut jeans, dark makeup on women, women tended to have shorter hairstyles back then, but even these things are relatively tame compared to the decade style forgot(the seventies).
I think the 2000's became more focused on quirkiness, as indie rock replaced alternative hard rock. People wear neon colors in places where they never would've dared in the '90s. Big glasses and tight pants are trendy, for both guys and girls.
Just as an aside. I personal believe that the real 90s were over by about 1999. 1999 and 2000 were sort of weird "purgatory" years as far as culture goes. I consider the 2000s to start around 2001.
The more I think about it, the more I have to say no, the 00s nor the 10s (thus far) have any relation to the 90s. Fashion and music look completely different to me. Tight jeans replaced baggy clothes. Indie/Folk replaced alternative. Dubstep and electronica have largley supplanted traditional House. We need not get into what has happened to Hip-Hop. Girls, IMHO dress much more formally and nicer today than then. Us guys also look more crisp than the whole "It's cool to look homeless" craze that overtook the early to mid 1990s. Heck, I even think since about 2008-2009 or so, there's been another complete break in culture from the 00s to the 10s. Nu metal and Emo disappearing with folk and dance music making a huge resurgance. Alot more female singers as well. I definetly think "decade distinction" is alive and well.
A lot of posters on this thread aren't paying attention to current trends or live in areas where fashion is stagnant. But The 90's were distinct from the 00's in music, fashion, and pop culture.
There are 3 different parts of the 90's
The Early 90's(Which was really an extension of the late 80's.People still had mullets, big hair, and pastel colors in the Early 90's. The 90's culture didn't begin until 1992, and that only lasted until 1998 which bled into '03 or 9-11. Grunge stopped being popular around 1997, and the colors got bouncier, and the music followed along with it.
The Early 90's is quite distinct from the late 90's. These music videos clearly show the differences and fashion and video quality.
The 90's ended on 9-11-01 in world views as society got more paranoid from late 90's optimism. And another thing I've noticed is that there is more of a polarized Red/Blue state divide politically in the 00's than in the 90. Bill Clinton won the election in '96 in Red States like Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. These states would be nearly impossible for a Democrat to win in this era.
Another thing I remembered about the 90's where did I used to play Arcade games at the Arcade, Laudromat, or Diner. These died out sometime around the Early 00's and now most people play games online. This would be unimaginable in the 90's where the game systems were 16 or 32 bits.
And pop culture changed around '03 when social media started to become more popular,Rap/Hip-Hop dominated music airwaves, Reality TV was becoming more of the norm, People got famous just for being famous(Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian), the Internet started to become a way of life instead of something nerds did,and Skinny Jeans, Electonic Music, Indie, and Hipster Fashion started to become more trendy in the late 00's.
There are differences between today and the late 90's (duh), but they're much more subtle than previous decades.
1949 to 1959 = monumental difference
1959 to 1969 = gigantic difference
1969 to 1979 = large difference
1979 to 1989 = colossal difference
1989 to 1999 = enormous difference
This sums it up: a few days ago a friend and I channel surfing and we landed on NBA TV. They were showing a classic game from the 1999 NBA Finals. It took my friend a few minutes to realize he wasn't watching a live game. Only the lack of HD gave it away. Admittedly he isn't much of a sports fan, but do you honestly think he would have made the same mistake had he been watching a game from the 80's?
Straight hair increasingly became more popular as the 90's went along. Although, pin straight hair was around in the 90's, it was much more prominent in the 2000's. Still going in the 2010's. Straight hair is certainly not the only popular female hairstyle, though.
Not hugely popular, but still hanging around: Post-grunge and pop punk.
The whole Ironic and cynical attitude thing that became really mainstream in 90's won't go away. It only gets bigger. Almost everything has to have an ironic spin to it.
