I remember my first time at a casino. I was like a deer in headlights, not knowing where to start. Speaking of odds, roulette is a tricky one. I mean, almost 50% for red or black sounds good, but then there's that 0 and 00, right? And don't even get me started on those 'penny' slots that cost a small fortune to play! My folks had this thing for slots too, and my stepmom had this uncanny luck—wins every time. Wish I had that kind of magic touch!
I recall when I lived in Northern Michigan, my LL told me that two of the regulars we'd see at the local tribal casino (we'd go for the buffet ) were going through a rough time. They were an elderly couple and the wife was in a wheelchair. But she was always at the slots. Apparently it was well known within the community that the wife had caused their marriage serious harm by gambling to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. The husband put up with it for who knows what reason.
Apart from that, I can't say that I've come across anything, even anecdotally by word of mouth. I know people who spend quite a bit of money on lottery tickets. While perhaps not the most financially responsible decision, it's nothing that's even close to ruining them.
The max I've spent at casinos is probably $300 across all of the 20+ years I've been able to legally gamble in the states. That was during a weekend trip to Vegas. I set a set budget for gambling and didn't go past that.
Not a gambler here. If I am in Las Vegas and walk though the casinos, the place stinks of desperation. Faces are grim and it sure looks to me like no one is having any fun.
Gambling is one of those things that I simply can not understand. I work too hard for my money to throw it away and it should not take too much brain power to understand that those really fancy casinos and fountains are all paid for with the losses from gamblers. It takes a lot of losses to build a luxury 15 story hotel and there are dozens of those hotels, all paid for by gambling losses. Its beyond me why people think that they will be the only one who wins, while everyone else loses.
No one in my crowd is a gambler, so I don't know anyone with big losses, but I have certainly seen some really dumb things done to lose inherited money. With the exception of the stock market. The stock market is just grown-up gambling and I've seen people lose a lot of money gambling on the stock market.
I go to a hotel/casino about twice a year and spend one night. I take $1,000.00 with me. I arrive about 4pm and use valet parking. I get to my room and I relax with a drink. I hit the blackjack tables about 6pm. I prefer $10 to $15 tables. I gamble for about 2-3 hours then take a break for a drink and a nice supper. I come back to the tables and play until midnight. Then back to the room for a drink and sleep.
The next day I check out and go to breakfast about 10am. Then back to the tables for a few hours. I do not win all the time, but I do win some of the time, but also do I rarely lose more then $400.00. I thoroughly enjoy it.

Oh, and has anyone tried online casinos? I've been exploring a bit and found some interesting stuff, especially the best slot games. It's a whole different world out there! Anyway, just thought I'd share my two cents.

Just re-read my post. I've not been of gambling age for 20+ years yet More like 15+ years!
I'm not a gambler myself other than the odd lottery ticket. However, I went to Las Vegas once and saw a man in a three piece suit sitting on the sidewalk outside one of the casinos bawling like a baby. It was quite sobering and I suspected he had just gambled away the kids college fund or something similar.

I flew out to Vegas a few months back for a work event. Woman sitting next to me was like the wheelchair woman. She loved gambling, video poker/slots and was going to Vegas for a week. Her husband was retired and stayed home.
Go to most local casinos and they are filled with old women sitting in front of machines.
