I've met folks who've gambled everything from their monthly rent to their family inheritance, from their students loans to modest lottery winnngs and lost everything after just one or two nights of "having fun" and "feeling lucky" in the casino.
Anyone else know of anyone who gambled away their money and LOST big time?
Gambling addiction is a disease, like any other addiction. A compulsive gambler can't control the impulse to gamble, even when it has negative consequences for them or their loved ones.
Gamblers gamble whether they are up or down, broke or flush, happy or depressed, and they will keep gambling regardless of the consequences -even when they know that the odds are against them or they can't afford to lose. Of course, you can also have a gambling problem without being totally out of control. Problem gambling is any gambling behavior that disrupts your life. If you are preoccupied with gambling, spending more and more time and money on it, chasing losses, or gambling despite serious consequences in your life, you have a gambling problem.
While I agree gambling can be a problem for some, I'm talking about the folks who by whatever means come into a lot of money, or needed to come up with a lot of money, and decided to take a chance in Vegas, and came up losing everything and then some.

We strolled through the slot machines and did not even see a nickel slot thst called to us to say "play me".
So we left, the $20 each we thought we'd play in tact.
So nope, no losses here
They've since added gaming tables, but other than understanding a bit of black jack I don't think I'll be playing thise either.
But it is an addiction and a small win provides a high for thise who literally gamble away everything.
I've been to Vegas twice, and have another trip planned for October of this year.
In those two previous trips, I gambled exactly $80. First time out there, I put down $20 bets on the Washington Redskins to win the Super Bowl, Washington Capitals to win the Stanley Cup and $20 on the Washington Wizards to win the NBA title.. And stuck $20 in a slot machine.
The Redskins bet.. Listen, I didn't win money, but that was 2015 when they surprised everyone and won the NFC East.. Just them making it that far was a win in my mind. The Caps collapsed in the playoffs again, and the Wizards, well.. But.. Those little bets made me follow the seasons a little closer and brought me more than the $20 enjoyment.
The slot machine.. Ok.. That was about $20 tossed away.
I understand that there are people who have a problem. Here in SC back in the late 90's Video Poker was legal.. And it was not unusual to see people go into one of those places and blow a paycheck.
I have little sympathy for them. You're responsible for your own actions. I do not blame casinos or video poker places or lotteries when people do that. I blame the people doing it.
Gambling can be fun if you have self control. We go every week or so. Hubby doesn't play, he just goes down the hallway to a lounge and watches TV. I just take a certain amount of money. When that's gone, it's gone and we go home. I don't go and take more out of the ATM machine.
Sure, winning is fun and it gives you a thrill, but some people are addicted and have no stopper button. I see so many elderly folks in the casino and most of them sit at penny machines. I wonder if they are gambling away their pensions and if they are even eating properly when their money is going into a slot machine instead. It's sad.
I find penny machines are the worst for winning anything. The "max" can be $2.50 or more for each push of a button. At that rate, it doesn't take long for a $20 to disappear.
