I used to watch Flip Wilson every Thursday night at 8:00!
Who remembers his cartoon special, I think it was called Clero Wilson and the Miracle of P.S. 19 (something like that). Young Clero grew up in Jersey City, where the Statue of Liberty always had her back turned toward the city. The "miracle" (spoiler alert) occurred when she turned around and winked at Clero.
The Gong Show a few years later was fun and unique too.
My mother & I had a favorite skit: "Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly..." Have no idea why it made us laugh so hard. Just two jars of people dancing around. LMAO
Yes, to Geraldine. I watched those shows too. The Smothers Brothers got tiring after Tom kept saying Mom liked you better than me bit. Cher always putting down Sonny got tiring too. As did Flip’s high voicing it and the “Devil made me do it”. When do TV execs say enough is enough?
LOL I forgot about the Mom liked you better than me thing. It was all funny and charming in the beginning like most variety shows in the 70's, and the insults were part of the schtick but they did get goofier and not so funny towards the end. I guess we could say that about most all comedy shows or just shows in general.
The executives most likely wanted to keep the money machine going so maybe they didn't stop the madness until it was too late and the ratings dropped. I read a a short biography of Flip Wilson one time, he was an interesting guy.
