15 miles before Willow it is 18F and raining! I have a great set of studded winter tires on my truck so I wasn't having any issues towing a trailer down an ice covered highway. However, the defrost on my truck could not keep up with the ice growing on my windshield. I had to pull off several times to clear the ice so I could see!

Yikes

When it's warm (well, Fairbanks warm) and precipitating I often end up with my defroster on high, heat cranked all the way up, and all my windows rolled down. It's really difficult to keep all the ice off the windshield without bursting into flames in the driver's seat.

I know. I am still stunned by this.

Peripherally related, it sounds like there's a critical shortage of foster families right now.

Other than driving on the Richardson and Badger Road, the weather has been quite pleasant this week. It feels quite nice outdoors when so warm. All we need now is more daylight, or at least January to pass-by.

Now, Badger Road is so bumpy that holding a cup or milk would probably turn into a milkshake. The Richardson is a lot better than the way it was last week, however.

Earlier today I was remembering my trip in January of 2013 (I like looking at my trip notes and photos sometimes). There was ice rain on the 14th and the temp was in the mid thirties. Then the temp started dropping and it was snowing on my way up to the Summit; the drive went well, and I remember people at the Fox General Store calling their kids' schools and telling them "Don't put my kids on the bus; I'm on my way!" That was a busy place that afternoon.

Right?! The weather is dreamy. It's a shame I am in the middle of a huge project at work and have zero time to enjoy it.

The roads are almost comical. Some of the roads in town are starting to get cleared, but the Parks, Mitchell, Rich, Steese are a joke. Top speed 40 mph lol. Thankfully, they cleaned up some of the really bad intersections in town, and the RR crossings.

Fortunately for me, I just got a bunch of front-end work done last year and there's a two year parts and labor warranty. #WINNING

Yes, soon there will be a lot of front-end alignment work.

I saw a guy on my way home tonight in a 1/2 ton Dodge on the side of the Mitchell and his entire rear wheel had come off and was way behind him on the side of the road.

Hope for his sake he doesn't have to go to Gene's.

What I found to be different this year is not seeing several vehicles sliding off the Richardson between Salcha and Fairbanks. The section of road from the Badger overpass up to Fairbanks is where I see the most vehicles sliding off the road, but for some reason not this winter. Now, I have been in Fairbanks for a long time, and have never seen Badger and the Richardson with so many holes on the thick layer of ice.
