I've been thinking of moving to Ft Lauderdale. I'm tired of the snow in Pittsburgh.

Is it expensive to live in Ft Lauderdale?

I am a very accomplished dish washer. Think I'll have trouble making it in this city?

1. Fort Lauderdale is a service based economy so we have restaurants a plenty.

2. Rent is almost on par with Brooklyn NY minus the pay you can get so thats something to think about.

3. In a good area like certain parts of Davie, Plantation, Sunrise Pembroke Pines you are looking at 900 to 1000 for a one bedroom. So keep that in mind.

I have a 3 bedroom and its running me about 1450 and thats the cheapest I could find. The place seemed all quiet and what not but since I have been living here One guy bodied his wife and then killed himself. Another guy held his wife for hostage and they had the entire complex blocked off until they could get him out. Another dude shot the **** out of a cop and then dumped the car down the street from me and took off on foot. And the list goes on and on of crap that has happened. Plantation or Pembroke pines might be a good look for you also parts of miramar. Also make sure you have a good working car or bike *motorcycle* because getting around here on public transportation isn't the best idea, its way to hot and humid and you would arrive soaked in sweat.

Use rent.com or one of those places to find rent. Also try to get a restaurant job down on Las Olas its a bit more upscale and pay is a bit better.

Prices are comparable to Brooklyn and you have a lot of freaks in your neighborhood because, from what you describe (especially the crime stories), you seem to live in a complex. In Brooklyn you are talking 1000 a month in a terrible neighborhood. If you look beyond those overpriced ratbox apartment complexes, you have an array of relatively attractive properties in HOA controlled neighborhoods (no freaks allowed) in the 900 a month range. You can rent livably (without kids) for as low as 700 in Sunrise, 850 in the Pines, 750 in east Hollywood (well, my buddy does it anyway). Yes, Davie is expensive because the majority of it's "good" areas tend to be single-family without many multifamily properties. The two west Davie apartment complexes (Palm Trace Landings and The Palms) are constantly showing up on the Miami-Herald police blotter for things like burglary and car theft, oftentimes the only crimes in the entire report. The rest of the surrounding areas are very safe. You are also paying for ok schools, something the OP most likely does not need.

Point being, prices here are NOT Brooklyn status. They are high, out of line with the local wages for sure, but have about 800/month to live in a safe neighborhood, and if you look a little harder, maybe you can go lower.

To the OP; don't do it.

Moderator cut: OP asked nothing about a comparison to NY in any way
As for prices, all one has to do is go to apartments.com to see rents are closer to the 900/1000 mark than not here in south florida. I just finished going from complex to complex looking for a place so those prices are fresh in my mind, again apartments.com will show provide the evidence for this. You can get cheaper but I assure you the place is either annoyingly tucked away some where OR isn't that nice/safe

[edit]

Hollywood is substantially cheaper than the places I named BUT that place is older.

Moderator cut: OP sis not ask a thing about NY
All one has to do is go on craigslist.com to see that apartment complexes in South Florida are notoriously overpriced, and that this is a renters market saturated with all sorts of condos, sublets, and single family homes for rent, rendering these allegedly "managed" apartment complexes obsolete. All one has to do is go on apartmentratings.com to be assured that you don't want to live in a complex, but you would be better off renting in a condominium complex or a small building.

Moderator cut: same reason
