I'd like to prequalify this question by saying I love animals and I hate seeing them being subjected to harm in any form. I hate watching certain nature shows just to avoid seeing them getting consumed or hunted. My question is; How long do Burrowing Owls nest and do they stay in one spot from one clutch to the next? I hope to by a lot next week and hope to build within two years. I would hate to purchase something then have some owls move in and I can't build for the next seven years. Again, I love animals so please don't think that I'm cruel but I couldn't afford to fund a 40 to 50k habitat.

The best thing to do in this situation is to install a starter burrow on your property in a location that will not impact the building of your home. If there is a starter burrow, an owl will most often choose that site rather than dig a new burrow in a place where you don't want them. Easy instructions on how to install a starter burrow can be found on the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife's website CCfriendsofWildlife.org.
There is a lot of misinformation about building on a property that has a Burrowing Owl. The City of Cape Coral has all the information you need -- you can build. If you plan your building to avoid building during the nesting season so you will have less of an issue. Having an owl on your property is an amazing experience. They are very entertaining and people all over town have them on their front lawns and have encouraged them to come live there. Another recourse to consider is purchasing the book Cape Coral Burrowing Owls Don't Hoot[] This will tell you everything you would ever want to know about this wonderful bird. (including starter burrow information) The book is available on Amazon.
