I hope Florida is going to take action to protect the beaches and wildlife areas. We cannot depend on the incompetent federal government or BP who may go into bankruptcy after this is all done.

YouTube - Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy

Remember, in every crisis, there lies the seeds of opportunity. Maybe we'll all be gainfully employed shovelling oily muck into barrels bound for the refineries in Texas by the end of summer.

BOOM times a comin'....yahoooooooooo!

YC.......

The best article I have found so far.
RIGZONE - In Situ Burn Conducted on Oil Slick; Spill Volume Revised

The only "progress" I have read
  • To date, the oil spill response team has recovered 16,311 barrels(as of 4/29) (685,062 gallons) of an oil-water mix. Vessels are in place and continuing recovery operations.
  • 69 response vessels are being used including skimmers, tugs, barges and recovery vessels.

Can someone make me understand why oil rigs do not have an automatic emergency shutoff valve??????
I am in the restaurant business and I can NOT OPEN MY DOORS until all gas equiptment has an emergency shut off.......and that's only to protect my employees and customers in one little restaurant.
Here is an off shore rig with hundreds of employees and the potential to ruin the economy of the entire Gulf Coast......and no shut off.

Blowout preventers, which can weigh up to 500,000 pounds and stand 50 feet tall, are bolted on the top of a wellhead on the seafloor and in an emergency can cut off the flow of oil to prevent a gusher. The blowout preventers can be activated by throwing a switch on the drilling rig. They are also supposed to activate automatically in the event of a major problem or, in some cases, can be activated by acoustic sound waves produced from a ship on the surface.

I just wonder if oil companies periodically test those blowout preventers to make sure they work. Probably not since periodic testing would be unduly disruptive to production.

I don't know if the BOP can be opened and closed like a valve or is a one time fail safe device. Here is a link regarding efforts to stop the leak:

If the BOP is designed and intended to be a one-time shot in the event of a blowout, then obviously it is not periodically pre-tested on site.

I also wonder how many miles out is the Gulf Stream from Sanibel/Captiva. A huge black blob could go floating by in about a week.

It seems like the most vulnerable part of the Florida coast would be the panhandle. Then the currents may take it away from the shore and to the Keys and out to the Atlantic.

It appears that the loop current could bring the oil slick within about 50 miles of Sanibel/Captiva.
