Sure they cannot volunteer an entire day, grow most of their own food, but they certainly can do many of the others I listed. Did you even bother to read it before criticizing?

I'd like to move to a shack somewhere, and regain the "pioneer life" experience.

I myself prefer indoor plumbing, central heating, electric lighting. To each their own.

Most of these things seem like stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime!

About fostering a kid - in our area, an adult has to be with the kid at all times. So only one of you (if you are a couple) can work when the kid is not in school. Even a 17 year old can not be left alone in the house.

Yes. I needed specifics in order to generate a comment There will be a breaking point...if someone can't follow enough of these tips, the resulting effect will be a cascade. They won't be able to live below the poverty line. Where that breaking point hits will depend on the person, but I'm suggesting that for low income people who are already disadvantaged that breaking point/cascade will hit quite a bit sooner.

Living on low income yet in a beachfront condo. COL is so low, we don't even have to do the stuff you mentioned. Lots of expat seniors.
Where are you living?

In many places sleeping outside would get you eaten by bugs or be dangerous. Grocery shopping daily is a lot of work. I save money by grocery shopping once a month at the cheapest store overall. Then I just need to pick up perishables in between. When you are older it’s better to live in town close to medical care.
