Oberlin to Cleveland
Yellow Springs to Cincinnati
Granville to Columbus

Sarasota probably fits that bill best for Tampa, although not exactly I think what the OP was talking about.

Wouldn't Yellow Springs fit better with Dayton?

I guess Chapel Hill in the NC Triangle would count, and Marin County in relationship to San Francisco and Manitou Springs in relation to Colorado Springs.

Yes it would, it's much closer to Dayton, by about 50 miles.

Hmm, maybe Providence for Boston. But there are certainly cases for others.

Would Holland count for Grand Rapids?

Providence has its own metro and is a city of substantial size.

As for Pittsburgh, Sewickely and Beaver would fit the bill.
Sewickley is a suburb, not a satellite town. If you want to talk about boutique satellite towns, try Ligonier and Slippery Rock. It also wouldn't surprise me if Greensburg, Latrobe, Zelienople and Grove City develop this kind of reputation in time as well.

For San Diego, I would say La Jolla and Del Mar.

La Jolla is only a community within San Diego not a separate city, but since San Diego is so big in area and population, in most other metropolitan areas it would have remained a separate city. Like La Jolla, Del Mar is right on the beach, has its own mini-downtown and is just north of the La Jolla portion of San Diego. Each community flanks UCSD, La Jolla to the south and Del Mar to the north. The "Silicon Beach" area, though it might be more accurate to refer to it as "Biotech Beach", separates the two communities as well.
