We’re thinking of moving to the Kingsland/St Marys GA area in a few years (live in CT now). Right now it’s a toss up between there and Charleston SC. Leaning towards Kingsland because we have friends there. Also, I think I’d like Kingsland as it appears to be a fairly quiet living area to live compared to Charleston. I’ve read online that there are some flood risks, is that a big concern? I also hear the people are friendly and laid back (compared to New England). It looks a lot cheaper to live than CT. Love to hear some perspectives from those who currently live there. Thanks!

I live about 1/2 an hour away. Yes, it is considerably quieter than Charleston, but Jacksonville is but a short drive. Yes, the people are very open and friendly; the area has a very transient population due to a heavy military presence and its increasing popularity with retirees. I'm not aware of any real threat of flooding, at least no more than anywhere else in the Low Country. Yes, you will get a lot more bang for your buck in St. Marys than in Charleston.
What is your housing budget?

Hi! Thanks very much for your info! Sounds just like the kind of place I'm looking for. We'd like to eventually retire there if all goes well. When we do finally move in a few years I think we will be looking at a 250-300k house, probably new construction if they have good options.

Your budget should afford you some good options there.

My in laws are retired and live just north of Kingsland and yes, it’s quiet. The only challenge for them is shopping - 25 miles to Brunswick or 70 miles to Jacksonville for things like Costco, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, etc. Adds up to a lot of driving.

Yeah, I thought that might be an issue. I guess it means more online ordering then! Thank you very much for your input

I know this is an old post but let me chime in. I made the move from CT to Kingsland in 2017. All the necessity's are right here. Walmart etc. Costco is in Jacksonville so I make that trip once a month along with Trader Joe's in Ponte Vedra. There is a large shopping complex at River City about 20 south of Kingsland on I95. I recommend steering clear of any property that is in a flood zone.
