It's a pretty economically depressed rural area. There's not much more out there than space which if that's what you want, then great! What exactly are you looking for?

My mom lives there. She inherited my grandparents home. Our family has roots there going back to the early 1800's. I had quite a few relatives there but many have passed on. My mom had sold her house in Roswell and moved out there full time. I've been going there since I was a kid. The town is very small; they have 1 grocery store and only a few restaurants. There are really nice homes for reasonable prices. It's a nice town to walk around and ride bikes. If you want to do anything like go to the a larger gym, shopping, or movie; then you have to go to Athens or Thompson; 45 and 30 minutes away. They have a golf course but it's fairly run down. My mom's house is in town, but if I was going to live in Wilkes county I would want to live out where I had some land and space where I could hunt, shoot, or ride ATVs. We had some land but we sold it, but our family leased it out to hunters. I can't really say anything negative other than it's small and not much to do, but if you like a quite town with nice architecture where you can buy a really nice antebellum era home for cheap it's ok. There have been more people moving into the area but it has been any type of boom.

My wife and I are amateur astronomers so moving close to Deerlick Astronomy camp grounds would be a prime goal for us. Much of our part time work is performed online. How is the internet access? Thank you

Wilkes county has county wide fiber optic via Reliant Communications. We have had no issues so far in ~3 yrs we have been here.
