WINSTON-SALEM – As part of the Business 40 Improvement Project, one more bridge will open while another will close.
Weather permitting, the Church Street bridge will open to traffic on Friday, May 24. On Tuesday, May 28, at 5 a.m., the last remaining bridge, the Marshall Street bridge, will close to be demolished.
The Marshall Street bridge will be closed a month ahead of schedule and is scheduled to reopen by mid-January 2020.
Motorists and pedestrians will be able to use the Main, Broad, and Church Street bridges to navigate around the Marshall Street closure.
Also, the new Liberty Street bridge is expected to open in mid-to-late June and will offer another option.
To date, new bridges have been opened at Fourth Street, Peters Creek Parkway, Broad Street and Main Street.
“The earlier starting date for Marshall Street construction is a huge change from the original schedule,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker. “Closing the bridge at the beginning of the prime construction season can help move up the overall completion date.”
“The project is moving from having the bridge closures on the east side of the project to having the bridge closures in the middle of the project,” added Tucker. “We are excited that our contractor is already in a position do to this. Any time we can gain now will have a great benefit to the reopening of Marshall Street and ultimately Business 40. While it may be inconvenient for 30 days to have both Liberty Street and Marshall Street closed at the same time, the benefits to the overall project completion are huge.”
The original contract called for the Business 40 Improvement Project to be completed by August 2020. However, agreements between NCDOT and Flatiron
Constructors/Blythe Development, the prime construction contractor, reduced the construction timeline from 21 to 17 months, with opportunities to reduce the timeline even further.
WINSTON-SALEM – Beginning Sunday night, July 7 at 9 p.m., the outside lanes of eastbound and westbound Business 40 will be closed between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. This closure will reduce Business 40 traffic at this location to one lane, in each direction, for approximately 90 days.
Initially, the outside lane in each direction of the highway will be closed. Once that work is complete, the outside lanes will open and the inside lanes will close. The scheduled completion date for this work is October 5.
During the same time frame, the Peters Creek Parkway ramp to westbound Business 40 will be reduced to one lane.
Crews will begin work to lower the grade of the new Business 40 between Fourth Street and Peters Creek Parkway, creating a smoother ride when all of Business 40 opens in Spring 2020.
WINSTON-SALEM – A lane in each direction of Business 40 between U.S. 52 and Main Street is set to reopen during the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 30.
Westbound Business 40 drivers headed toward downtown Winston-Salem will be able to take an exit for Main Street past the U.S. 52 interchange, which has marked the closure point for westbound traffic since November.
Construction crews will also be opening the ramp from Main Street to Business 40 East. Eastbound traffic will have the option take the exits for northbound and southbound U.S. 52, or stay straight on Business 40 toward Kernersville.
To minimize the congestion at the interchange, the northbound and southbound U.S. 52 ramps onto Business 40 West will remain closed at this time.
“The original plan was to open the Main Street ramps at the same time as we opened the Main Street bridge, however, the bridge work finished so quickly that the ramps simply weren’t ready yet,” said N.C. Department of Transportation Assistant Resident Engineer Larry Shaver. “We promised the city and the motorists that we would reopen streets as they were available and that’s what we have done.
“We have seen a lot of happy motorists and pedestrians using Main Street, as well as Church Street and Liberty Street, for north and south access within the city. Now, we are pleased to provide another option to downtown for drivers on the east side of the project.”
NCDOT officials anticipate some initial morning rush hour congestion with the opening of the new Main Street ramp, since that is the most direct route into downtown for westbound Business 40 motorists.
“The new ramp should provide some relief to other routes like Fifth Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive,” Shaver said.
