I didn't realize the "Business 40" designation was going away.
Yeah, NCDOT announced it about a year ago, IIRC. They did a survey of residents and asked them to choose one of four names and Salem Parkway was the winner. The other three names were Golden Leaf Parkway, Innovation Highway and Piedmont Corridor.

So it will be signed as US 421 for the entirety between I-40 on each end? And the Salem Parkway name will apply to all of it, or just the segment in W-S?
BTW, I appreciate your posts and knowledge of NC roads!

Yeah, US-421 will still be signed between both ends of I-40 as it is now. The only difference is that the Business 40 signs will be taken down. According to this article from 2016, the Salem Parkway name will apply to the stretch between W-S and Kernersville, which I'm guessing means between US-52 and I-40.

The wording on that article is weird. I'm pretty sure it will be named Salem Parkway on the entire route. Here's some clues: The photos from the article are by Bus 40 at the Dash Stadium, which that part would not be named that if it ended at 52. The title says 20 mile stretch to be renamed. The entire thing is about 23 miles. 40 to 52 is only 16 miles. And lastly, Wikipedia says "NCDOT had also decided that once construction was completed, that I-40 Business would be decommissioned and a new name would be given to the freeway alongside the existing US 421 designation."
They shoulda said through Winston-Salem and Kernersville instead of between.

Yeah, I should've looked at Google Maps first. I'm inclined to agree with you. It doesn't really make sense to leave out a small part of it.
Given the way NCDOT has been pursuing new interstates over the last few years, I'm a little surprised they didn't go for the I-640 designation, but they usually don't do that unless there's a local push for it and W-S didn't seem interested. That was I-40's original routing anyway until 1992.
