Hi! We just moved from Seattle, where our child was in private school. I believe in public schools (am a product of them), but they were just not a great fit for our kid in Seattle. I am open to homeschooling if necessary, or looking at dual enrollment in community college.

How is First Colonial? Are the teachers good, kids nice, parents involved, etc? Is the atmosphere heavy on activism and politics? I'm really just looking for a school where the focus is primarily on academics.

Appreciate any insight you might have! Thanks.

First Colonial, typically referred to as FC, is considered a good school.. there is also a private school right next door to FC (Cape Henry).. don't know if you've looked at that yet(?)

FC's district is kinda gerrymandered, but it's mostly middle & upper-middle class neighborhoods. I dont think FC is uniquely political. (peace)

Thanks for the insight on FC! Appreciate it. I haven't checked out Cape Henry! Really, though, my concern isn't about class so much. More about institutional norms. Seattle schools are pretty radical, so I'm just a bit wary.

I think a lot of school systems have moved more to the Left in their ideology.. but Virginia Beach is a relatively conservative place. And it's more politically & socially conservative than Seattle. Good luck~

I worked as a school security officer with the school resource officer back in the 1990's at First Colonial. It was a good school then with few problems. I know this is 30 years ago, so I hope it's still a good school like you stated.

Dual enrollment is an excellent idea for many students. I teach at the local community college and I've had high schoolers in most of my sections of classes. For the most part, they are some of my better students.

I've heard positive things about FC. I believe FC also houses the Legal Academy for students who want to eventually study law or have 'law type' careers.
