I am considering buying a house with a water cistern. They are pretty common here as wells are very expensive to drill and if you are lucky enough to hit water, it tends to be extremely hard, acidic, and bad tasting. No city-supplied waterlines run very far, and not to the neighborhood. Hauling water from the city plant is routine for many...both my current neighbors do it without trouble.
The cistern is buried partly under the house below the freeze line. It is partially visible from the crawlspace, but the crawlspace isn't all that convenient to access. It would be nice to be able to check the cistern level remotely from, say, the kitchen. Of course once you learn your usage level you can avoid running out of water in the middle of a shower, but having a bit of advance notice seems nice. Any suggestions?
