HUNTINGTON -- According to a news release from the Huntington Tri-State Airport, Huntington's Tri-State Airport saw passenger boardings grow by 24 percent in 2009, the highest yearly boardings in 30 years.
Year-end boardings totaled 105,436 passengers, compared to 85,084 in 2008. The last time the aiport exceeded one hundred thousand passengers was in 1989, when 101, 577 passengers departed from the airport. The highest passenger level prior to that was in 1980.

The aiport has been steadily adding passenger since November 2006, when Allegiant Air began nonstop Florida service to Orlando. The airline added service to St. Petersburg/Clearwater, and Ft. Lauderdale in 2007 and 2008. In April of 2009, Allegiant added nonstop service to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

I was really impressed with the airport, I had never flown out of a WV airport before this January. It was much more convenient than driving up to Columbus and paying for parking, dealing with traffic, etc. It may have cost slightly more but then again I didn't have to pay for gas driving up there or for parking. I'll def. fly out of Huntington Tri-State from now on while I'm living in Huntington.

You have to wonder if they will take some business from Yeager Airport? I'd imagine that is a sticking point in Charleston since the areas between and especially to the south of the two towns would be drawn one way or the other.

yeager has to stay for gov't service alone. Summertime I hear national guard planes drilling every now and again making old window panes rattle in the neighborhood. Huntington seems to advertise some pretty good deals on airfare.

I prefer smaller airports, less maze, less bureaucratic IMO. When I lived in LA I avoided LAX (and their connecting congested interstate) like the plague. Long beach was slightly less and infinitely more convenient.

Oh, I don't think Yeager will be going any place. The Feds will
keep it going for the C-130s. But you just know there is some
competition with Huntington for the commercial business, and
the Huntington Airport has made some strides lately.

To what can this be attributed? Is it the flights to Florida? This time of year a flight to Florida sounds really good, but I read somewhere that temps in much of that state were in the 30s right now.

The Allegiant Flights have been a big part of the growth up to this point. They saw a 7% increase but they aren't the sole reason of the continued growth. US Airways flights from Huntington to Charlotte saw a 33% increase over 2009. The flights to Cincy have been steady with a slight growth which is pretty amazing seeing as how that airport is dying. It's losing flights and is now down to two concourses from what I've heard. Delta is actually switching hubs which will add more flight offerings in the US and abroad. They are almost finished lengthening the runway which may add a Los Vegas flight as well. All of these things along with a push from locals to use local businesses has been a big part of the growth.

Here's another good article on the growth of Huntington Tri-State Airport. It breaks down the reasons for the growth and also mentions that FedEx is considering upgrading to larger planes as HTS is the Hub for most of WV and the region. It will be great if they can add another Allegiant flight too and a flight to the North-East.
