Can anyone please recommend an adolescent Psychiatrist? We are not pleased with the one we are going to, and a couple others I have called are not accepting new patients. So I thought maybe someone on here could give me some advice. Thanks!

Probably need more info. How old is the adolescent and what are the issues. What don't you like about the one you are going to.

No, but based on the reviews I'd be skeptical. I expect a few disgruntled reviews, but when they outnumber the good ones, it's not a good sign for a doctor, a lawyer, a plumber, a store, etc. I'm glad you like her, and she could be great for the OP's child. I think the bad reviews were mostly about other staff than her, billing practices, etc.

To be honest, I'm very skeptical about the benefits of long term psychiatric or psychological counseling. I think an understanding of behavioral therapy and self help exercises is available for free on Youtube. They taught me to deal with my panic attacks after 9/11.

I think short term therapy can be helpful, but long term therapy seems to be an indication that it's not working. It can become a feel good psychological crutch that accomplishes nothing, instead of giving the patient the tools that will let them handle their own issues. Anyway the OP hasn't given an indication of the problem, or even the child's age. There are many specialists for different issues.

I can't imagine the area having more than a handful of psychiatrists (medical degree and prescribing) focused on adolescents as a private practice - outside of court ordered, which can be a whole different ball of wax.

My info is years out of date; my late wife (psychologist and psychotherapist) considered signing on to a group practice in the area that handled children and adolescents. The name escapes me. A benefit of a group practice is that the various therapists interact and have best practices standards and overview on an ongoing basis, and medication can be prescribed through the psychiatrist or MD associated with the group.

To respond to another poster - there are various types of therapy and lengths of therapy or intervention. Cognitive behavior therapy is currently popular partly because it is cheap for insurance companies, and can often have fast results. It is not a one-size-fits-all though, any more than a depression responds to therapy in the same way as schizophrenia. (Both are somewhat common in adolescents.) Most schizophrenics can function well with medication and ongoing support, but that can last a lifetime, just as diabetes often lasts a lifetime. With an adolescent, growth and hormonal changes complicate matters.

Popular press and those who haven't been around people with serious problems get a lot of things wrong. Not everything can be fixed. Some things can only be managed. The issues that respond well to CBT are only a subset of the field.

Someone please remind me of the name of the child advocacy center on Pratt by the railroad? Cramer? That might be a starting place for referrals.

I can tell you from personal experience, trying to find a competent psychiatrist is more difficult that finding needle in a haystack. Most are not taking new patients, there might be a very small minority taking insurance.
I wish I could help, our daughter is seeing one and while she likes her, I am not too impressed with the results.
