My husband and I are from mid-north Indiana and we visited family for the 4th. We took our kids to Indiana Beach and had a great time. Anyway, I need a native to answer a question for me. There was a house on Lake Shafer not too far from the park that the tour guide on the Shafer Queen had mentioned was once owned by a bookkeeper for Al Capone. The speaker system was too poor to make out the story, but I heard the guy's name was Stokes and he had to sell the house for $1. Does anyone have any info about this for me? I've tried searching for it with no success.

I did some looking as well. I suggest you contact the Monticello public library ... they may have some tidbits about Lake Shafer.

I haven't heard of that story before. I always thought that the Chicago mobsters preferred retreats and hideouts in northern Wisconsin.

I really doubt that Capone, his accountant or any of his mob chieftains would own property on Lake Shafer. Northern Wisconsin (the Northwoods) was the big attraction for Chicago mobsters including Al Capone and his brother Ralph, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, ‘****** Joe’ Saltis, Frank Nitti, Roger ‘The Terrible’ Touhy, mob hit men Sam ‘Golf Bag’ Hunt and Jack Zuta, Sam ‘Momo’ Giancana, Jimmy Hoffa, etc.

NW WI and further north into Michigans Upper Penninsula. The Northland in Marquette, Ojibwa in the Soo and House of Ludington in Escanaba all have historical ties to Scarface
