I though you said it was "optiona"l? Now you're saying it was mandatory. Which is it?

Is this even legal? I haven't applied for a job in a long time, but I found this troubling, especially since my friend is over 50.
Although it's not illegal to ask the question in itself, this is strong evidence of age discrimination. I personally, have contacted companies HR and told them I'd report them to the EEOC.

I think we all know that something can be optional, but the strong inference is you'd better fill it out if you really want any chance at being considered.

Sort of like the new phrase (to me, I guess it's been around) volun-told...when your boss says you can volunteer or that participation is optional (in words only) -- but you know darn well that "it would be best" if you did participate.

My friend went to the job fair where he filled out an app online and he said something to the effect that they would appreciate it if the optional stuff was filled out. I don't know anymore than that. I know that went I did the online app at home, it wouldn't let me continue unless I checked one of the boxes.

I asked my boss about this and showed him the question. He said it's legal and that companies are required to hire a certain amount of people from different age groups.

I believe this is also true when they ask about your military background, race, gender, or ethnic background.
I have even seen online applications that have asked for sexual preference (LGBQ) and gender pronoun choice (Zie, Sie, Ey, Ve, Tey, E)

Interesting. The only protected class is over 40, and they do not list that as an option. They could claim that "Other" is not necessarily over 40, it could be under 16, but I would expect any judge in a lawsuit to see through that. Still, even if you check that and are 50, you will have a hard time proving discrimination since the reason for rejection will most likely be something generic like "we went with someone better qualified."

Required by who/what? Not mandated by any US federal, state, or local law.

100% agree. Unless it is company policy, no such rule or law exists.

You also need to worry about age for juvenile labor laws, and having staff who are old enough to sell tobacco and alcohol, but the categories listed aren't specifically geared towards that.
