Times are tough, but it seems like KC is still having new restaurants open up around town. My wife and I need a few more places to add to our list. What are a few of your favorite restaurants that have opened in KC in the last year? Westside Local? Ingredient? Julia(n)? What other places have opened recently?

We didn't care much for Ingredient. Love Five Guys, although that's just burgers so not sure that's what you are talking about. There is one in Olathe and they are opening one at 119th and Metcalf just south of Boston Market (where Lone Star steakhouse used to be). Have you tried Han Shin at Town Center? It's been open, didn't open recently, but it's good if you like Japanese food that they cook at your table.

Hasn't Hanshin been around forever? I remember eating there in high school.

Most of my eating out is weekend breakfast/brunch, and pub grub.

To that end, my old neighborhood had a few nice recent additions in the past year or so. Cook Shack Cafe at 90th and Wornall celebrated a year in August, and is tasty diner breakfast and wonderful people/service. Not fancy, not large, but good food and lots of it at a good price.

Swagger at 85th and Wornall is good pub food.

I don't think so. It's at Town Center. Hibachi has been around for a long time though.

After a late night of bowling at Lucky Strike we went to Fran's. It is a new resturants in Power and Light. It's a diner with a huge menu. The entire front of the resturant opens up, so it makes for a huge patio and they serve pretty good drinks, says a freind who partook last night. It's open 24 hours, maybe the only place downtown open and serving a full menu into the late hours of the night. The food was really good and the decor was awesome.

Fran's opens in Power & Light today - Kansas City Restaurants and Dining - Fat City

About time something was open late for food. It's always struck me as absurd how comparatively few late-night diners there are in the metro, given the size, sprawl, and population. I come from a much, much less populous area, and if small town nightlife can support a variety of late night/24-hour diners, I'm sure a metropolitan area with a much more diverse nightlife can as well. Personally, I don't hang out much at P&L, and my nightowl days are not as frequent as they once were, but it's good that someplace recognizes that niche.
